Swiss Rolls, Ritz Crackers, Pepperidge Farm Gold Fish Recalled Over Possible Salmonella Contaminated Whey Powder - FDA Says List Will Grow

  • Global Moderator

Three different snack food companies recently did nationwide recalls for several of their products due to their supplier of whey protein powder notifying them that the powder may have been contaminated with Salmonella.

No illnesses have been reported yet. Salmonella may cause serious (sometimes fatal) infections in young children, the frail, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and (in rare circumstances), may get into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

None of the companies have disclosed their supplier, so it is unknown if the recalls are linked.

    • Flowers Foods: voluntarily recalled several varieties of Swiss Rolls sold under many different brand names (Mrs. Freshley’s, Food Lion, H-E-B, Baker’s Treat, Market Square,
Great Value, Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread).

    • Mondelez: voluntarily recalled 16 varieties of Ritz Bits and sandwich crackers (including Ritz Bits Cheese, Ritz Cheese Cracker Sandwiches and Ritz Bacon Cracker Sandwiches with Cheese). Their recall covers the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. PDF.

    • Campbell Soup: voluntarily recalled Pepperidge Farm, 4 varieties of Goldfish crackers (Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar, Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion, Goldfish Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar and Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel).

    Update:

The FDA warns that the list of recalls related to this contamination could continue to grow.

The contaminated batch of whey protein is now known to have originated from Associated Milk Producers. The whey protein is used to add a cheese flavored “flavor blast” topping and also to make dry food more shelf stable.

    Newly added…

Pinnacle Foods: voluntarily recalled Hungry Man 15.25-oz. individual frozen microwavable dinners with “Chipotle BBQ Sauced Boneless Chicken WYNGZ” on the label, a best buy date of 9/6/19, and establishment # “EST. P138” or “P-138” on the side of the carton, that were shipped to retail locations in MA, PA, and VA. The whey powder was used in a ranch dressing seasoning incorporated into the mashed potatoes packaged with the chicken.

Kroger had Ritz crackers and Ritz bits as part of their Friday/Saturday only .99 sale a few weeks ago, and I purchased a couple boxes of the Ritz bits then. I’m taking them back to the store and will ask about exchanging them for boxes of Ritz crackers.

Would the powder not been added to the dough and the salmonella killed during the baking process?
