Line vs staff positions in a company

What is the general definition of a line position?
For a company that sells products, my understanding is that line positions are the those that are responsible for the P&L. Staff positions are those in support functions – accounting, human resource, legal, etc.
What about companies that sells services - accounting, legal, consulting, etc.?
