Ink Rewards affected by Staples Program changes? Don't get cheated, obtained a good outcome, see post

Hello,
If you’re like me, and purchased $50 in ink between August '23 and Jan '24 for staples ink recycle benefit of 10 carts a month @$2 ea for $20 in rewards and now find you’ll be cheated of $15 a month you have left due to rewards changes keep reading.
I was so angered by this I PM’ed staples at the FB page PM option and explained my displeasure that I would effectively lose $30 in rewards if I recycle 10 carts in Feb & March and earn only $5 each month. (purchased $50 ink mid Sept '23)
Please to report they are going to issue me 2 x $20 coupons ($20/20) $40 total to make up for the mess. I’m glad I complained, and I flat out told them they are going to be flooded with complaints, as 1000’s of customers are likely in the same boat.
If you PM them, have your Staples Rewards account # to include as part of your message so they can verify what you are telling them. Obviously if you didn’t buy ink since August, this doesn’t apply to you at all.

Wow $5/mo now for 10 recycles. Did they do away with the $50/180 days purchase requirement?

Yes, they did.
-
Right, but given most of us bought that $50 ink when it was 50% back in rewards promo, here’s what we are losing.
$25+ tax oop net to buy ink to qualify for 6 months recycle.
$20 in ink rewards x 7 months (ie, buy 9/15, get recycle benefit Sept to March inclusive) = $140 in rewards back
Net $115 in rewards
New program, 7 months of recycle x 10carts = $35
$80 lost in rewards per 6 months, not to mention stacking the $20 ink rewards with a $10/30 Q that printed with tech recycle. So really you got up to $210 in value from those 7 ink checks.

What are you guys on about? The program looks like it’s staying exactly the same. Unless I’m misreading the points. And now no purchase required.

I checked my account yesterday, showing I earn 100 points per cart up to 10. Are you a premier member? or plus? I’m base.
-
already got my coupons, valid to 8/6 which is nice.

OK this is weird, out of 5 accounts, 3 have the 10 cartridge limit and 2 have the 20 cartridge 400 points limit. Seems very strange. Spend should be about the same, not sure if the plus or premier matters, but all these accounts should have a lot of spend.
-
@dangeruss Check out the other thread. 10 carts @ 100 pts each is what a new account gets. You probably didn’t create your accounts all at the same time and the older ones got 400 pts., the newer ones 100 points.

Nope, newest account has the 400 points offer.
-
@MISTERCHEAP did you ask about ink recycled before Feb. 7?
-
I had my account for a decade, but I only got 100 points per cart. Customer service had to help me out though as my user name was not my e-mail address, so maybe that is why it may be considered a new account, even though it lists my order history. Any way to get the 400 point offer or am I out of luck?

Hi Maine, no I did not, as it didn’t apply to my situation. I was going to get over there sooner but had family issues to deal with this week so pretty behind schedule.

I’m thinking there must be some kind of ‘kicker’ level of spend, etc that flags it for 400. I can’t imagine a new account with no spend history gets 400 points, only ones who would are staples employees/associates, perhaps certain business accounts?
-
I just chatted. I recycled before Feb. 7 and those 20 will be credited as per the old program. My monthly recycle limit went up to 30 but since I recycled for Feb. under the old program the 30 doesn’t start until next month.
CSR said that the offers were “fluid”, based on spending and that there aren’t any target dates or spend amounts.
me: if I can recycle 30 this month how do I know if it’s the same the next month?
CSR: check your account each month before you recycle
me: if my offer has changed, i.e. all of a sudden I can only receive credit for recycling 20, what can I do to get back up to 30?
CSR: there’s no way to know. There’s no spending target. The statuses (Elite, Premier, Base) are gone.
me: why does it say that points will post in 24-48 hrs but in the Ink Recycling T&C it says that it can take up to 60 days?
CSR: 60 days is if you do it online. If you do it in-store it’s a “one & done” transaction like any other in-store purchase and will credit within 24-48 hrs.
-
So I guess each month I should check my recycling offer to see if it remains crappy or not.
-
@mrvietnam You probably have to spend real $ to upgrade it. IDK if it will count but maybe buy Visa gc this week. I have accounts that have only recycled tech but presumably because they are so old they received 15 carts @400 points. I’m going to max out ink recycling on them until they get downgraded then go back to just recycling tech. However, this week they’ll buy a $200 prepaid visa and recycle ink & tech.
-
It’s a bummer this new program seems to treat each customer differently based on their history with Staples. I spent a lot of money at Staples over the years, but it is not reflected in my recycling offer.
-
@mrvietnam. Complain! 🙂

I spent a ton of money within the last 6 month per account, and the results are inconsistent. Would be nice to have some guidelines.

Yes, I’m thinking the same thing. all these offers seem to be like ‘offers’ you get in the Dunkin or BK app, not always the same. It’s all over, Maine with 15 carts? 15 has never been a monthly number. always been 10 or 20 max.
-
As a (paid) Plus member with Staples who does a monthly 20 ink cartridge recycle, I was curious how this would work out. Once I finally got past all the new “selections” and pop ups, I finally got to a web page showing I’d get 400 points each, up to 20 cartridges.
However, in this month’s Rewards showing my $40 ink rewards earned from recycling last month, I see it’s “for in-store only”…! WTF? That used to only be for the $5 reward for a tech recycle, etc.
But the weirdest “new Staples” change IMO is the website change, at least on my PC. No way to search across the site, or access your account to change profile settings etc. Now it seems you need to use the Staples mobile app to do stuff like that!
Hoping I’m mistaken here, and someone can provide a URL that works on a PC to search across the site?

All of you jabronis need to buy a color laser printer. My starter set of color toner that came with the printer lasted 11 years. Granted, I don’t print as much as y’all do.

Huh? These cartridges were purchased just for recycling – nothing to do with printing.

i am also a “paid” plus member, with the same situation. I reached out to Staples about the “instore only”, and they told me the code on the coupon should work online also, if it doesn’t, they would credit my account.
Anyone else notice a lot of the items to choose from for the “pick 5” have been removed?

We had the “pick favorites” list years ago and at least for me it was useless.

I bought a $200 visa gc and recycled a cable & 15 ink @ 400 points. I was expecting 7K points but only earned 6600. 🤔

Yeah, something similar when I recycled 20 inks on 2/8. I got 1,000 points “when you recycle tech, batteries and more”, then 400 points 19 times for the inks, for a total of 8,600 points.
On the bright side, they say I already have $43 of “Easy Rewards ready to redeem”.
But I definitely miss the ability to SEARCH site-wide on their website on my PC.
Have to use the Staples mobile app for that!!

OT- I see they are trying to save by cutting store hours as well. Now the store doesn’t open until 11AM on Sundays, was 9AM. Used to be 8AM during the week and they pushed that back to 9AM-8PM, not even open 12 hours.

has anyone contacted CS about a majority of the custom picks disappearing? there used to be a few that would bring the prices down from their overinflated prices. now, about 75-80% of them are gone. that is a highlight of the “plus” program.

I guess I was a bit confused as the latest rewards were issued earlier than normal (February 8th) as maybe they were closing out that program. I took a screenshot of the page under the new rewards that show I have 20 cartridges to recycle before I recycled them.

Results from yesterday’s visit to staples turning in 20 cartridges and 1 battery" with nothing else on the receipt:
On the receipts under “Easy Rewards Point Summary” it has:
Points redeemed today 800
Points remaining -800
The store manager had no idea, and suggested I call the support center. The points posted quickly, and I received an email stating that I have 8600 points (only 19 empty cartridges X 400, plus 1000 for the battery.) It’s funny that they have one line for each cartridge.
I do like the fact that you don’t have to “spend” all the points at the same the same time like you did with the $40 rewards coupon.
The expiration date on the coupon has remained 3/31/24.
