The Code of Virginia provides for the issuance of an Emergency Protective Order (EPO) in situations involving domestic violence, threats, or stalking. Under § 19.2-152.8, an EPO can be granted by law enforcement or a magistrate to provide immediate protection to a victim. It can include provisions such as removal of the abuser from the home, restrictions on contact, and temporary custody of children. EPOs are typically valid for up to 72 hours, giving victims time to seek further legal action.
