RE: CCleaner hacked with malware
@fivetalents said in CCleaner hacked with malware:
In a blog post by vice president of products Paul Yung, he states that the company identified the attack on Sept. 12 and had taken the appropriate action even before Cisco Talos notified them of their discovery. Yung says the attack was limited to CCleaner and CCleaner Cloud on 32-bit Windows systems—fortunately, most modern PCs will likely be running the 64-bit version.
Sounds like Mr. Yung is ready for politics.
Wouldn’t part of the “appropriate action” be to announce the hack?
Of course, in the same breath we can say that we don’t care about non-modern PCs … and make that sound like a positive. Sheesh. -
RE: Common sense rules of banking - tips & tricks !
I’ve opened 3 checking accounts in the past 6 years where I needed checks. Only one of the banks offered free checking. That didn’t stop me from asking, and getting them for free at all three. I haven’t yet had to re-order.

RE: Official Crown Vic Thread
@barrytuneup Congrats on your Grand Marquis. You’ll get a little longer age out of your tires if they are occasionally used. A mile or two every couple of weeks is better than none. Also, if you ever have to leave it parked outside for a long period, put some tire covers on them.

Get daily Dark Web Internet Surveillance from Experian ($10/month)
OMG, Ron Popeil might blush at that. Ignore the chutzpah of charging, and just think about “Get daily dark web internet surveillance”. I’ve heard that the population is getting too lazy to think, but really? It’s Experian, Equifax, Transuntion, etal that we need to surveil. I wish we could just lock them in the dungeon?

RE: Credit Card limit your max amount if possible.
@mom2jel While I disagree with your suggestion on the credit limit, I will admit that our cards’ cash advance limits are much lower than the bank initially set. In over 30 years, I’ve never used a cc cash advance, so am okay with them being set low.

RE: VPNs
After seeing this article, I’m feeling like it is kind of pointless - no way to verify that you are actually getting the services you’re paying for:
I agree that the industry is akin to Congress and used car sales, but you can verify some things, just not everything. Availability and reliability are much more important to me than logging and record keeping. If you really want to guarantee a lack of logs, and no record keeping, wait for the new VPN service from the USPS.

Also, today is National Nut Day so no knocking nuts today please (not even honorary ones).
That’s just great. So now my mother-in-law has her own holiday? I’ll never hear the end of it.

RE: Three AMEX Blue rewards card...merge them?
No, don’t consolidate them for the reason @doveroftke said. In fact, for the cards that are primary, get you or your spouse added as AUs (authorized users) so that you get up to 3 more cards. Create online accts at Amex for each of the new cards and when a great offer comes along, you have greater odds of receiving it multiple times.

Target Identified.
Javascript from anrdoezrs.net.
Fire one for effect.FYI, this is not a change on my end. I have always had js from anrdoezrs.net blocked. It appears to be a commission junction spook.

RE: Long term car rental. Tips tricks for the best rate or upgrades
If you’re concerned about comfort, don’t get stuck in something for 4300 miles. Try Costco. Their weekly rentals are around 250 or less, all in, and you can at least find something comfortable before renting long term. I can’t figure out how to insert a pic, but a weekly (Dec 2 -9) rental in zip 14221 has Budget intermediate (Elantra/similar) for 207 all in. For 10 bucks more you can get a standard (Legacy/similar) or full size (Malibu/similar). All include unlimited miles. Once you find one that suits you, try to negotiate directly with the office for a monthly rate of that particular car. I don’t really think they care, but it’s possible your high mileage might throw them off, so also try a different location.
If you hit Enterprise or anyone else who tries to rent you a Caprice, run. Don’t look back. Run.
Thanks to @fivetalents for the pointers. Here is the screenshot that I just described:

RE: Firefox Quantum 57.0 anyone tried it yet?
I’ve been a Firefox user since v. 1.0, but the last few years have been a bit much. From updating without my permission to breaking addons that work safely, I may just go back to lynx. While I’m at it, DOS 3.3 sounds good, too. “:-)”
