@vegasvegan In older reviews the package said it was made in Europe and packaged in China. Made in “Europe”?

Product is 10 for $12.99, $1.29 ea. So they’re cheap even after the mark up.
I would be surprised if something could be manufactured more cheaply in Europe than in China but if so, then you have to get them to China.
Ship them to Rotterdam where they are loaded on a slow boat to China.
From Rotterdam the ship will travel through the Suez Canal and across the Arabian Sea where it could be hijacked by Somali pirates.
Finally the ship reaches China where they are off loaded and shipped to a packaging facility.
After all that they sell for $1.29 each?

@my4mainecoons On another brand they explain it. Looks like the same packaging different wholesaler.

Q: How is it made in Europe, packaged in China?

A: This is a great question, and we can understand and accept the consumer’s doubts. Actually we can offer the cheaper products for the following reasons:

    • This is an authentic Swedish Dishcloth – from a brand that you can trust! It is imported from Germany! Fun Fact – A German Company bought the original Swedish company 20 years ago – thus Swedish Dishcloths are now primarily made in Germany!
    • Wood pulp and cotton rags exported from Germany to China are not slices seen by buyers, but finished large barrels of coils. After arriving in China, they are cut into pieces of different specifications according to different uses and then divided into packaging. China’s labor, storage, turnover and other costs have more advantages than European and American countries.
    • In terms of shipping, from Germany to China and then sold to the United States, there is only one more ship freight, which is much cheaper than the cost of labor, storage and turnover in Europe and the United States.
    • Our goods processing is in a coastal port city in eastern China , where the basic conditions such as manufacturing, processing and transportation (mature industrial chain) have obvious advantages. In addition, the products are mainly shipped to the western United States, and our products are shipping directly and fast between China and the Pacific Ocean.
    • The above four points also expound the optimal rule of division of labor in global supply chains.

@vegasvegan So once they get sliced & diced in China then they get on another boat to sail across the Pacific to e.g. the Port of Los Angeles. The towels have traveled 3/4 of the way around the world and only cost $1.29 ea. They must cost < 1¢ to produce if they can sell them for $1.29 which includes the cost of production + shipping + packaging + shipping + distribution.

@my4mainecoons I guess it’s like the fish caught in Alaska and then shipped to China where it is processed, packaged and shipped back.
When your labor force is that cheap I guess it’s economically feasible.

Among EU Member States, the Netherlands was the largest importer of goods from China and Germany was the largest exporter of goods to China in 2020.

Someone must be making money somewhere.

@vegasvegan If the container is unloaded from the ship in Rotterdam then trucked to e.g. France which country imported it, the Netherlands or France? I’m guessing there’s an import company in the Netherlands and that’s why the Netherlands is the largest importer of goods.

I took Macroeconomics in college…lets just say it was Over My Head

  • 500 Club

@vegasvegan I’ve never taken an economics course which is probably why shipping wood pulp around the world doesn’t make any sense to me.

  • 500 Club

@my4mainecoons LOL…from what I can remember of it, I have never taken one either. 😕 :

  • You all, gave me interesting facts!
