Best Safe Way To Pay Google Play

  • What is the safe way to pay Google Play to keep your CC & bank info out of the cloud?

  • If I understand the question, in order of safety

    1. Never provide your cc or bank info to Google
    2. Provide Google with a rebate or gift card number
    3. Use a virtual cc number

FYI, in a moment of insanity, I used Google Checkout many years ago when they were offering all sorts of discounts and never suffered any ill effects … other than a sore backside from the many times I kicked myself for trading my info for a handful of silver. 😞

  • I used Google Wallet to have some clients pay me for some work I did. No issues whatsoever. I know google is like big brother, but I don’t see it any differently than giving your card info to Amazon.

Who says I give my card info to Amazon? LOL. I use virtual account numbers there too (and GCs from GPT activities).

  • @meed18 I understand that they are both behemoths, but I believe that Amazon would sell their non-existent soul for the data hooks that Google has.

Yes, Amazon knows some of what I occasionally purchase, but they don’t know too much about the places that I digitally surf, nor anything about the places where I physically surf, nor where I might have an adult beverage.

Google knows all of those things, and even if they say they don’t collect anything personally identifiable, they collect enough info that, tied together, identifies me perfectly.

If I were younger, or had a better memory, I might lose sleep over it. 🙂

I think that Citibank and Discover are the only two currently offering virtual account numbers. I don’t know if it applies to all of their products, so check the terms carefully.

When you’re looking for a source, you may want to confirm that the virtual cc is good for one, and only one, use.

I also round up to the nearest dollar of what I’m buying and set that as the maximum charge allowed for that number. This should prevent any fraudulent, repeat, or over charges. I also set the number to expire the next month to limit availability for scamming, unless it’s for an account like iTunes that requires me to have a credit card on file to even download freebies, then I set the expiration for 12 months with a 1 cent maximum charge. For accounts with monthly bills, I generate a new virtual number monthly.

  • what about those prepaid visa cards at the supermarket?

another approach is to have a good relationship with your bank so that even if “they” try to jack you, the bank will probably side with you. i have a fairly large account with e*trade and if anything they are more careful than me. i’m always getting called to confirm charges, and if it’s an international charge it’s often denied and i have to call to tell them to let it through.

Bank of America has them too.

  • Why not buy a Google play card at the grocery store? Many stores count the purchases towards their reward programs.

Um, since a great number of physical stores now use the cloud for processing transactions, what makes you think that most of your in-person transactions aren’t ending up in the cloud?

As for fraud, i believe it’s safe to say the majority of cc fraud arises from data acquired from brick and mortar transaction processing, not online. The crooks may use the card information information online, but you lost it in a store.

Aside from which, with a cc, you’re protected 100% from fraud.

The safest way to pay Google play is to enter your credit card information directly into Google play.

Honestly, I think people worry about the wrong things.

    Chris.

Didn’t know there was a Google Play Card.
    Thanks

I know privacy is non-existent today, but I still try to limit the exposure my financial information has.
Over ten years ago I drove my parents to the airport and dropped them off. I only stopped briefly at the curb to let them out and give them a hug. Two days later I got a coupon in the mail for parking at that airport. I had not been at that airport in at least 10 years. I’m pretty sure my license plate was rec ordered and my address was sold to the parking company and others. At that time I knew privacy was impossible but I still try to limit the exposure of my financial information.

I’m not worried, but Google is watching.

When your CC is compromised like mine was, you will worry.

I’ve had my CC compromised several times in the last decade. Over $30k worth total. Doesn’t really bother me since that’s someone else’s money. Few minutes on the phone to cancel, reverse the charges, and get a replacement card sent. No big deal. Less annoying than a parking ticket.

Conversely, I haven’t had a Visa/MC debit card linked to a bank account in over a decade. I have an ATM card that requires a PIN and only gets used inside the bank.

You have two factor authentication to access your email account, right? Shouldn’t you have it on your bank account as well?

edit: Oh yeah, and I second the recommendation to buy a Google Play card with cash at CVS if you don’t want Google to have your payment info.

My comment was specifically in response to cpaynter’s last sentence, and was slightly sarcastic. I hoped that the linked article would imply that, but my social skills aren’t my strongest suit. I don’t give the Googler any more info than is absolutely necessary, and take pretty good precautions when using my cc online.

Ours have only been compromised twice that I know of, and most probably occurred after use at B&M … although one time it was after I bought something at buy.com. 🙂

Looks like your connection to PhatWallet was lost, please wait while we try to reconnect.
