    BJ's Tea Kettle (K8-P22-P)

    Smokin’ deal on a decent sized tea kettle and a dirt cheap holiday gift! 🙂

    Note: When specifying your zip-code, there’s a check-box option to show only those clubs which have the item in-stock. YMMV on finding it. Happy hunting!

    EDIT: Looks like you can order it on-line for in-store pickup, provided you select a warehouse location that has it in-stock.

    @thediggler
    Some pretty bad reviews on this kettle.

    I picked up a few of these, and since they’re so cheap, I decided to open one up and try it out. My initial impression is that the kettle itself is made of very thin metal (not a deal breaker for $5).

    The mechanism to open the spout is awkward: you have to PUSH FORWARD/UPWARD and HOLD the release “button” on the top of the kettle handle (with a decent amount of force). Instinctively, you want to PRESS DOWN on the button (which, if you succeed, you’ll likely break the button or handle).

    There doesn’t seem to be an option to lock the button so that the spout remains opened. I can envision this “button mechanism” wearing out over time (but so long as it lasts at least 5 years, that too is not a deal breaker). Having to press the button forward and HOLD it seems like it could get old fast, so that might become a deal breaker.

    Haven’t had any issues w/ hot steam burning my hand but then have hardly used this thing. I’ll try to eat some instant soup over the next week or so to give this thing a more thorough test (maybe even make some, gasp, tea!)

    So far, for $5 this is not a deal breaker. Aesthetically I find it very appealing (although that’s subjective).

    Used the tea kettle several times today, where on one test, I purposely let it boil (and whistle) for 10-15 minutes straight (to try and allow heat to build up).

    The handle itself (back end, farthest away from the pouring spout, which is where you’re supposed to grab the handle from) never got hot to the touch.

    During the “extended boil” test, I noticed that while pushing the button forward, if I had the flat part of my thumb pressed down directly against the handle, some steam could be felt as water poured out (which is obviously “hot”). If I shifted my thumb slightly to prevent it laying flat against the handle, no issue.

    In short, while I still find the button mechanism awkward, I don’t have any reoccurring issues w/ hot steam burning my hand, fingers, or thumb (which I guess is also a finger! 😛 )

    For $5, so far this tea kettle is a no brainer of a purchase.
