Staples: No Activation Fee On $200 Mastercard Gift Card Purchase (7/19-7/25), Limit 5 per customer per day.
In-store only
Normally the limit is 1, this time it’s 5. Use a card that earns at a high rate on office supply store purchases.

For those who are not aware of the problem. Here is a link with an article about it from frequentmiler.com (from December 2019)::
https://frequentmiler.boardingarea.com/major-problems-reported-w-mastercard-gift-cards/
According to them it looks like the issue is now resolved. It used tibe MasterCard would make the account numbers sequential, so they were quite easy for a bad guy to guess your account number. Now the account numbers are random. Personally I have bought a lot of money in MasterCard gift cards and have never had an issue.

@mrvietnam
I agree I haven’t had problems with MC gift cards since they went to random numbers. The balance checker is almost identical to Visa’s. If I had a choice I would still buy visa since it can be used at Costco, but would take MC if no choices.
-
@mrvietnam I stayed away from MC because of the hacker issues, but after reading the article link, and learning that transactions using the MC often got rejected with the funds drained, forcing the customer to file a dispute for several months to get the funds reloaded, I am really glad I stayed away from MC.
-
I had to dispute several MC gift cards years ago. It took a few weeks to restore funds even though I had receipts and the cards. I had to sign affidavits that I didn’t recognize the purchases made at Walmart and Lowe’s. It was a pain. If you’re not good at keeping receipts, registering these cards, and checking the balances occasionally, or using them almost immediately, you will be taking risks.

The old MC GCs were issued by U.S.Bank. The current MC GCs are issued by MetaBank, same as the Visa GCs.
The balance checker is almost identical to Visa’s.
I use EXACTLY THE SAME website to check both Visa and MC GCs. Single bookmark.

The two links are different.
One is mygift.giftcardmall.com (visa) and the other is mcgift.giftcardmall.com (mastercard).

Checking MC at the Visa link works just fine. There is no need to use the MC link.

I just read on SD there is a similar promotion at Staples for Visa $200 gift cards limit 5 from 8/2-8/8. My credit cards have been pushed so far from the last time, my credit score is dropping ☺️.

Thanks, I updated the title of the thread to reflect the new sale starting tomorrow. Do you happen to know if the limit is 5 like the previous offer or just 1 like in times past?

What does limit of 5 mean? Does it mean we can buy 5 at one time instead of one at a time? That would be so much easier. The daily max is $2k. $2k gets flagged by L.P. and store won’t let you do it. I don’t buy more than $1600/day/store. It would be great if we could get e.g. $800 twice. I missed it if limit was 5 last time. Bought them one at a time in July.

Limit of 5 means you can buy 5 in the same transaction and it will waive the activation fee for all 5 at one time. They had that offer 2 weeks ago with the MasterCards. We will see now with the Visas if it continues to be limit 5 or goes back to 1 at a time.

@jbw already said 5. I also highlighted it in my response before.

Thanks. I must have missed that. I will put the limit of 5 in the OP.

Thanks. I don’t buy MC gc so I wasn’t paying attention to the offer.

Bought 9 in one transaction to stay under $2k. Register might have let me buy 10 but I didn’t want to push it.

What benefit do you get for buying prepaid cards at Staples? Do you have a credit card that gives you 5% cashback at office stores? I usually by my prepaid cards at Safeway/Albertsons because they discount it so it is a MM to buy the card and then my Am Ex Blue Cash Preferred card gets me 6% cashback.
-
Not that you can order Visa gift cards and get cashback, but for those of you who are contemplating another purchase, today may be a good day to do it. Rakuten is giving 10% for Staples online orders one day (8/3/20) only and DOSH will give you 6% on that same purchase, so you could get 16% cashback on your Staples online order today.

Not Visa GC, and not Rakuten, but I have received cashback for eBay GC, which was a surprise.
