Please help me buy a modem & router
-
I’m converting from DSL to cable. My instincts tell me that I should buy rather than rent the modem and router ($14/month). I have $120 in Staples Rewards, a few gc and a $20/$80 coupon to use. What should I get? Probably only getting 300mps (?) but want to be able to grow. Currently using a FAR Trendnet 54 mps router for DSL.

@my4mainecoons Do you need wifi built into the cable modem or do you want two separate boxes? Or do you need wifi at all? Can you use the Trendnet as the router connected to the modem?

There should be lists for your cable company that are compatible. I have dsl, but helped picked out a modem for a friend and spectrum had specific modems they said we’re compatible.
-
@zerenia I don’t understand the question. Just Internet. No TV or phone.
-
@my4mainecoons do you connect any devices like a phone, tablet, smart speakers/tv, things like that? They usually connect over wifi and not plugged in with a cable. If so, you need a wifi router or one built in to the modem.

@briarycliffs I have a wireless network to which I connect laptops, tablet and smartphone (no phone service, just wifi). Is that what you mean?

Yes, do you connect to someone else’s wireless network or is it from the dsl modem?

@my4mainecoons Who’s the cable provider?

Maybe get this one from staples (price match to amazon for a few $ less).
You can continue using your existing router or upgrade to something like this? Price match for a few $ less as well.

@dangeRuss It’s going to be Xfinity. To see compatible equipment you have to have an account. When you sign up for the account they ask if you want to rent their equipment. I guess I could sign up saying that I will be using my own equipment then buy the equipment. I was thinking that I should have the equipment first.
@briarycliffs I used to borrow my neighbor’s cable wifi using my DSL. Then he changed his password. 🙄

Update: I found a “new customer” offer for $40/mo including the modem & router for 2 years. That gives me 2 years to figure out what equipment to purchase and to understand how everything works.

I recommend you to buy Reyee RG-E5 Wi-Fi 6 Router. Its price is about $200. I think it’s the top router on the market right now. It is good for the speed of the Internet and very useful for online games. The second point for successful playing online games is the ability to buy game gold. There is a good service for this goal.
