The largest supplier of eggs in the United States halted production after chickens at a Texas plant tested positive for the highly contagious bird flu -

Saw this early this am.
Did not know where to post on PW.
I think the chix are sick in Michigan too.

I thought this would mostly affect folks near TX. I also thought it would affect the store brand eggs since it sounds like Cal-Maine is an egg factory.

The cows and pigs may be next.https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/avian-flu-h5n1-cow-outbreaks-1.7162626?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&ICID=ref_fark

If there’s bird flu here, stands to reason it will show up elsewhere. Plus since they are the largest supplier, if the outbreak worsens and they have to sharply curtail egg production, it’s simply supply and demand economics in that other egg producers will have to pick up the slack. Egg prices have already climbed significantly since early in the year. Was back down to $1 a dozen, now $2.49-3 for a Large Dozen around here.

Spreading to cows.

@mistercheap I don’t know “normal” egg prices. I buy short dated (50% off) more expensive eggs and have been paying $2-$2.50/dozen for years. Pete & Gerry/Nellie’s have had tearpad qs and since they are local if I had to pay full price I would buy theirs for $4/dozen. There are also insert qs for Egglands Best. The cats get 4 yolks/week but I rarely eat eggs myself.😺
