DNA testing: 23&me $69 or $139 (Health Reports) OR Ancestry.com $59 thru April 25th

DNA deals for DNA Day on April 25th:
23&me Ancestry $69
23&me Ancestry + Health $139
Ancestry.com $59
I recommend 23andme.com over Ancestry(.com):
I did 23&me + Health several years ago and I found the results get better over time as more people are added; they are the only ones FDA approved to release some of the health reports; their DNA ancestry is superior to Ancestry(.com)'s reports. 23&me integrates with myheritage.com for genealogy.
I did Ancestry.com this past year because I thought I might find more (distant) relatives; I didn’t find anyone new compared to 23&me.I attached screenshots from Ancestry.com and 23andme.com so you can see the differences for my results.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Note that if I click on ‘Great Britain’ (52%) I don’t get anymore distinct results, the 13 sub-regions all show “zero connection”.

Why would anyone pay to give their DNA to anyone ?
-
While agree, and personally wouldn’t pay to give away my DNA info, these companies have strict privacy policies which they adhere to.
The big concern is if and when these companies go bankrupt, their privacy policy ceases, and all of your DNA info goes to whoever buys out the company. And that company can do whatever they want with your DNA info, as it becomes their property. 😬

Don’t use your real name, duh

For me personally it was for the health portion, my son has an incurable immunology disease that no one else in either family has ever had. I spotted an ad by 23&Me looking for people like him and he was able to do his for free. Then I became curious about mine and my parents (both elderly, so gotta do that now or lose out) health concerns, the genealogy portion is a fun side thing for us.
I have a friend from from school days that was adopted, she did one of these tests to see if she could find relatives - she did! It’s been fun seeing her find her family this past year (1 full sibling, several 1/2 siblings), her birth father passed but she was able to meet her birth mother (adopted mother has passed). While there doesn’t seem to be a connection with her birth mom, she is wonderfully discovering her sisters and they enjoy visiting each other.

Not to mention this info getting stolen.
Once certain info is out of your hands it’s fair game for anyone and everyone since there is nothing you can do about it.
Someone having your DNA info is Nth time worse than them having your SSN, DOB, CC#, Address and your employment info.
IMHO it’s not worth risking your future.

You do know the name is not one of the things that a payment processor checks, right? I could say I’m the queen of england and the charge will go through.
You could also, I dunno, go buy a prepaid card using cash while wearing a disguise (or pay someone to get it for you) if you really are that paranoid.

Interesting consideration now given the use of genealogy and DNA in catching the golden state killer. I guess you can’t stop your family from using these services though…

Well if you’re a serial killer, don’t submit your DNA to these services…
But maybe that’s how you catch serial killers - they’re the only ones not submitting their DNA to these services.
Kind of like terrorists and life insurance.

In the news this week: “Relative’s DNA from genealogy websites cracked East Area Rapist case, DA’s office says”.
It should be obvious by now that DNA test results go into a government database. I’m glad they caught this killer but for sure the data will be misused and errors will occur. Watch the movie “Gattaca”

$49, ends tomorrow (other tests on sale as well)

Pretty interesting article with several interesting points (read the entire article):

GEDMatch.com allows you to take data and match from different services, example you found your adopted 1/2 brother and you wanted to be sure neither of you was switched at the hospital. He did his at 23andme, you did yours at ancestry.com. You can download your Raw DNA data, and do matches at GEDMatch. Lots of other utilities too. Be prepared though, it has a steep learning curve and appears to be run by volunteers. I am trying to find more matches than ancestry.com provides.

You give a new meaning to the word “DNA profiling”

I think that will amount to fraud and by your own definition will make you a serial killer

It’s only fraud if you intend to do fraudulent things with it. I’m giving them my card and I fully intend to pay for the service.
It only really becomes a problem if they need to do manual billing verification for whatever reason, that’s when the name comes into play.
