  • Good deal.

This specific Red Pocket deal only shows two of the four towers. Representing AT&T & Sprint networks only.

So Red Pocket which USUALLY sells these to use on any of the 4 networks.

This one is AT&T & Sprint only.

Thanks for the additional info. How were you able to determine that?

  • Just from the pictures on the Red Pocket eBay listing. This Red Pocket ad & other RP ads that are for less than all 4 carriers will not have all 4 carriers colored towers pictured.0_1526351252262_s-l1600.png

See ALL FOUR Towers? In OPs linked listing there’s only TWO towers.

    That’s a good catch, TY.

The “What you need to bring” section says
"Nearly any AT&T compatible, T-Mobile compatible, unlocked GSM, Sprint compatible, Verizon LTE compatible or other unlocked LTE CDMA Device to use with our service."… I guess that only refers to compatible devices, and only partially indicates which towers will be available (CDMA and/or GSM as the case may be with specific major carriers specified by the colored towers on the offer).

Make sure to use their “Will my device work?” function.

I’m on Sprint and have a Sprint SIM. My device is definitely unlocked - I bought it outright - and yet it says my phone doesn’t qualify.

It’s an iPhone 6s in case it matters.

  • also check using the tello and ting ESN checkers. You may need to call sprint to whitelist your device if it wasn’t previously.

The compatibility tool won’t correctly recognize my device as an LTE device and will only allow me to register it as a 3G device.

When I enter my IMEI for LTE devices, I get the error message “ERROR: CDMAS: Device Validation Failed on CDMA-S. CDMAV: Not Certified.”

When I enter the MEID for non-LTE and LTE CDMAS devices (both Dec and Hex), it is not accepted as a 4G LTE device, instead it returns the message “CDMAS: Accepted for 3G.”

The instructions say “If you are activating a CDMA LTE capable device you must use the 15 digit IMEI. If you are activating a CDMAS LTE capable device you must use the 14 digit MEID. For all non-LTE capable devices use the ESN or MEID.” So, my phone should be recognized as a 4G LTE device one way or the other.

Anyone know what the problem is or if there even is a problem (i.e., will I be able to use 4G anyway even if I register it as a 3G device)?

  • I have an AT&T Prepaid phone that was never activated and therefore still locked. I guessed a locked AT&T phone cannot be used with RedPocket? [I did a compatibility check and get “ERROR: CDMAS:Device Validation Failed on CDMA-S. CDMAV:Not Certified”]

    TIA

  • @phat200 The error message is probably because the AT&T network is GSM-only–it doen’t use CDMA. More importantly, if your AT&T-network phone was specifically built for one of AT&Ts prepaid service providers, it may have a custom boot-loader that prevents it from being carrier-unlocked. I recommend some research into your particular phone model, or perhaps just purchasing a 15-day prepaid sim first.

As discussed above, this deal is for both AT&T (GSM) and Sprint (CDMA).

  • I am just trying to confirm that a locked AT&T Prepaid phone cannot be used for the Red Pocket service?

Separately, what happens if you go over the 5GB data? They also have a $5/mo plan with 500MB 4g data, w/ 100 talk +100 text. That is the one I am interested in.

  • @fivetalents I purchased three of the 360 day Red Pocket 100min/100text/500MB data plans. I received activation numbers via email within a couple of hours and SIM kits about a week later. The SIM kits contained GSM cards for AT&T, T-Mobile, and a single CMDA card for use on either Sprint or Verizon networks. Each activation number will activate only one of the three cards provided. (When one card is activated the other two cards become invalid.) By definition, an unlocked GSM-only phone will not accept CDMA SIM cards; And, while unlocked CDMA/GSM phones accept GSM cards they may not provide full LTE coverage. As an example, an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 G930P (Sprint) will only support two of the four channels used by the T-Mobile network. I don’t know if an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 G930T (T-Mobile) will accept any CDMA SIM cards, but I had no problem using Red Pocket T-Mobile SIM cards in my carrier-locked T-Mobile phone. As I alluded in another post, there is a difference between carrier-locks and boot-loader locks. Boot-loader locks are installed on some pre-paid phones to prevent discounted, low-cost phones from being used with another plan.

Thanks so much for the detailed and informative reply. I want to activate an old CDMA Sprint phone (Galaxy Note 5) that does not have SIM cards and would never have been boot loader locked as it was released for post-paid plans. Maybe I need to ask Sprint to release the phone/remove their carrier lock before Red Pocket will recognize it as a 4G device but that seems unlikely since I don’t think Sprint would lock a phone for use with 3G but keep it locked for 4G.

It is my understanding that if a phone is locked to a carrier, it can not be used with any other carrier, including a major carier’s MVNOs or between MVNO’s on the same parent carrier. It is locked to/can only be used with the carrier it is required to be activated with for the first time (unless it is somehow unlocked, although some less expensive phones can never be unlocked).

As for data: this is an unlimited data plan, but only the first 5GB of data per month is at 4G LTE (I think it may be 2G after that but couldn’t find that documented on their site).

I’d just google your specific model number. Info on carrier locking is not model specific, but it should be fairly easy to find out if a given model can never be unlocked.

  • @fivetalents You should have no problem reactivating your old Sprint phone with a Red Pocket CDMA SIM, provided your phone’s ESN number has not been reported as lost/stolen and there is no unpaid balance on an existing account. To activate the Red Pocked SIM card you must supply the phone’s ESN number. The Activate section reads, "Sprint or Verizon-compatible phones-CDMA ESN/MEID (for all Sprint phones or Verizon compatible 3G phones) or LTE CDMA IMEI (for Verizon compatible LTE phones)
As an aside, to activate a GSM card for use with AT&T or T-Mobile, you DON’T need to provide a phone IMEI number, you only need the ICCID number from the SIM card itself, That means a Red Pocket T-Mobile GSM SIM card can be placed in any T-Mobile (or carrier unlocked) GSM phone, provided it is size compatible.

Thank you. I’m not worried about being able to activate my Sprint 4G LTE phone (the ESN is clear and Red Pocket’s compatibiliy checker accepted it). I’m worried that since Red Pocket only recognizes my 4G LTE phone as a 3G device, if I activate it as a 3G device they will not allow me to use the monthly 5GB of LTE data.
