Me too. If it’s spam related, how about blocking that ip from posting instead of blocking all access?
-
6AM is when we do a backup and restart of the site. Looking at the logs that was when we had the lowest number of people using the site and thus the least number of people would be affected.

So in short, it doesn’t matter to you if only a few of us are effected. Nobody should be affected!
Can you please recommend a time, or times, when nobody will be affected?

It’s funny you chose “that” time. 3am-4am ET might be better.

I’m confused. You’re complaining about the site being down @ 6 am, and then you recommend a maintenance window with 6 am smack in the middle.

I’m often on PhW during this period, and I don’t ever recall being by myself at that time… not even remotely. In fact, while I was on the site during this interval today and took 10 random measurements throughout. On average, between 3am and 4am EST, there were 53 people using the site at any given time (not the exact same people either as some came and went), and the absolute number of people never fell below 45. That’s a lot more than “nobody,” especially when you factor in unique individuals, not just an average count.
Clearly, no matter when the update occurs, dozens of people will be inconvenienced. However, the alternative (e.g., not having recent backups putting you at risk of losing many threads, posts, votes, viewing stats, etc. due to drive failure, malicious attacks, hijacking etc.) is far worse than the minor inconvenience of having to wait a few minutes to protect the integrity and smooth functioning of a site and service that is being provided for free. The only thing that would change by changing the time, other than inconveniencing even more people since @dangeRuss runs updates during the lest busy time, is changing who gets inconvenienced… and I don’t see why any group should get preferential treatment over any other, especially if it isn’t generating revenue for the site.
That’s my 2¢.

3 people posting this morning and got the boot multiple times. Nice! There’s no money in posting Trivia Answers for you, so I guess that’s what it boils down too. I guess it’s time to just continue posting on MTT where iv’e been for years, cause this site Bites the Big One!
I was speaking for myself, not the site owner. However, no, I really don’t see why he should inconvenience more people to accommodate someone who only comes here to participate in one special interest thread and contributes nothing to the rest of the site or membership here. No offense, that’s just practical reasoning. The inconvenience of not being able to post for a few minutes while the site is updated and maintained to provide a high quality community is a minor trade off for the free service you are provided (also remember that it is not free for the site owner to run this site).

Yep, the American way has now affected this site. Screw everybody else, it’s all about me and myself attitude!
No, the owner is trying to do what is best for everyone in a way that inconveniences the fewest people. It is your own “me and myself attitude” that makes you think the owner should inconvenience more people to suit your personal needs. Again, I could see the owner inconveniencing more people to accommodate you if there were extenuating circumstances that would justify it, like your activity during the outage bringing revenue that enables this site to keep running… or making any meaningful contribution to the site. You have given absolutely no reasonable justification for moving the outage to a busier time other than it benefiting you personally. Your unjustified indignation doesn’t change facts.

There was and still is a valid reason, but you both just keep ignoring the issue. This site just can’t handle a small volume of visitors at one time! You need a good IT person, but I guess you don’t pay that well!

There was and still is a valid reason, but you both just keep ignoring the issue. This site just can’t handle a small volume of visitors at one time! You need a good IT person, but I guess you don’t pay that well!
Perhaps I missed the valid issue? You asked a very reasonable question about the daily site outage. The owner explained that the site needed to be maintained daily and that he examined the site usage/traffic before scheduling the maintenance during the least busy time when the fewest people use the site. Yet you insisted that nobody should be impacted by the need to maintain the site. How is that possible when there is no time when nobody is on the site? You have not clearly explained what justifies moving the site update to an even busier time, and became upset when I suggested examples of valid justifications such as you doing something during that time slot that generates revenue to keep the site going or meaningfully helping the community at large.
BTW, IT has little to do with it… sites for huge companies with abundant resources we don’t have go offline for their site maintenance all the time. However, as I said, the site you get to use heavily for free, and seem to have very little appreciation for, is not free to the owner to run. Who do you expect to pay for said IT? I find it contradictory that in one breath you become offended when I suggest that the site needs to generate revenue to operate and turn around in another breath and suggest that the owner spend even more money when you are doing nothing to help generate revenue for the site. I guarantee you that when the site generates enough revenue to hire staff (IT, moderators, coders, designers, etc.), everyone who has been donating their time and efforts for over a year to provide this free service to our members will be very pleased. Why you expect a grass-roots effort in its infancy to be where FatWallet was after over a dozen years in business is beyond me (FatWallet wasn’t even self sufficient in its early days).
Again, if you have a valid reason to inconvenience more people during a busier time slot, please state it more clearly than you have done so far.
Thank you.

Your novels are quite impressive over a simple issue that you neglect to focus on!

I’m sorry that you are unable to provide a valid reason for your second request. Since your initial question/reason for this thread has been answered, I’m an marking this thread resolved. I’m also locking this thread because further attempts at reasoning are pointless. Please be assured that the scheduled site maintenance will be moved to a less busy time if and when such a time is identified.
Thank you.
