What's the deal on skinny fonts?

I think it’s actually called the ‘weight’ of the font.
It seems more and more web pages are using them along with normal fonts.
Apparently it’s not to squeeze more words across a single line because it is
often just a word or two right in the center of a page.
Is it to save ink? LOL JK
