@fivetalents Would this work on a cheap ATT prepaid (LG) phone or do I have to buy a phone called Tracfone? IDK how Tracfone works…

From cheap to flagship, the cost/quality of the phone is irrelevant as long as the phone is compatible with AT&T or T-Mobile bands/service. If so, what matters next is whether your phone is unlocked (either because it was unlocked when you bought it, is eligible to be unlocked because you paid for the required minimum # of months of service and/or you paid to have it unlocked). Whether prepaid or postpaid, huge discounts are offered on locked phones because the carrier expects to make a profit on the service, so they’re pretty strict about meeting the minimum service period reacquired before/ they’ll unlock your phone for you. However, any phone (locked or unlocked) can always be used as a WiFi only device to make VOIP calls and use the internet/internet based apps without activating service with a carrier.
Tracfone is just an MVNO (don’t have their own towers/lease towers from the major carries). So, like the major carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile,Verizon, & Sprint), Tracfone does not manufacture/sell their own phones. The carriers/MVNOs just negotiate prices with the brand/manufacturers (Apple, Samsung, LG, Motorola etc.) which determines whether phones will be locked and for how long (and in return the manufacturers pre-installs the carrier’s/MVNO’s software in addition to the manufacturer’s software).
So you need to find out if your phone is locked (if yes, then buy cheap service from the carrier/s until they’ll unlock it for you, or buy an unlock code on eBay). If, for example, you’ve been using a locked LG brand phone as a WiFi only device and it’s locked to Tracfone, this plan would be perfect to get service and be able to unlock you. phone in a year. Since your LG was subsidized by AT&T, once you get it unlocked, you buy the SIM card/Tracfone plan above then go here to activate the SIM card once you receive it from Tracfone.
Also note that the minutes, text, and data in this deal are issued once for the year (not replenished monthly).

way too complicated for me. I’ll just stick with my flip phone and its monthly plan…

Would you consider this phone/service bundle? New hsn customers get an additional $20 off. It runs off the Verizon network. https://www.hsn.com/products/motorola-moto-e5-57-16gb-tracfone-w8mp-camera-and-1500-/8879320

@briarycliffs So I wouldn’t have to figure out what locked vs. unlocked means? or what a Sim card is?
What happens after one year – buy a new phone?
eta: might be oos. Kept getting message to call Customer Service.

eta: might be oos. Kept getting message to call Customer Service. It did sell out overnight, bummer. That is correct though no worrying about locked/unlocked or sim card. These packages have everything you need and you only need to decide to get a new phone number or transfer your current number. Many of use get these each year when the service runs out. I add a few gb’s of data over the year, I only turn the data on when I need it. It’s cheaper to get the package deal every year than to buy another year of just service/minutes. HSN has other phone packages and so does the QVC. You can check this thread, where we keep track of the bargains. https://phatwalletforums.com/topic/34/current-tracfone-deals-discussion-thread/168. Sometimes ebay has a good package deal.
eta: It looks like QVC has $15 off for new customers and they have this phone deal (I loved my old rebel phone) https://www.qvc.com/Tracfone-LG-Rebel-4-5"-Smartphone-with-1500-TalkTextData.product.E233693.html?sc=SRCH. I don’t know if their new customer coupons work with phones though, and they charge a little for s&h.

@briarycliffs ya know, I never understood what the Tracfone thread was about. Now I get it. I’m in no rush. I’ve been muddling along with my flip phone and a $20 smart phone for wifi access for a while. I’ll follow the thread and wait for next package deal. I’ve only gotten free phones from Verizon or ATT in the past. The store person has moved my phone number for me. If I buy a phone online then I’d have to figure out how to do it myself…

I got this one before; yes, they send you a SIM, but they also send you the card. I tossed the SIM and used the card on my phone. Added an easy year for next to nothing.
