I got the download version and I live in California where software downloads are not supposed to be taxed. When I go through the checkout process it says “estimated tax to be collected $3.10”. Can anyone else confirm that California does not have sales tax for software downloads? Or did some new tax law pass that I wasn’t aware of? If indeed they are taxed, I would be better off buying the boxed version in-store so at least I could recoup 5% of the 7.75% sales tax in rewards to cut my losses.

Just change your shipping address to a tax free state (its downloaded anyway, so it really makes no difference what your shipping address is). The 5 tax free states are
•Alaska
•Delaware
•Montana
•New Hampshire
•Oregon

Thanks for the advice. I used a McDonald’s address in New Hampshire and no sales tax was charged. I guess California now charges sales tax on downloadable software. I hope I don’t get in trouble for tax evasion though. I guess that is highly doubtful that would happen.

Yes, I’d like to order a Happy Meal and a Big Macafee…thank you.

Interesting. Even though I entered a New Hampshire address, in my order confirmation e-mail it still listed my correct address in California, but no worries as no sales tax was charged.
Wait a minute though…for the rebate I have to enter the order number and the ZIP code, right? Do I enter my real ZIP code in CA or the ZIP code of the address I used in New Hampshire? Does anyone have any experience with this? I do not want my prepaid rebate card to go to a McDonald’s in New Hampshire!

they ask for ‘ship to’ zip for rebates.
Shipping and billing addresses are distinct, that’s why you see CA in your confirmation most likely.

So I put my order number and shipping ZIP code (in New Hampshire), even though that is not my ZIP code? I guess it doesn’t matter as the rebate will be send to the address I have on file with Staples Easy Rebates, which is the correct one in California, right?
-
yes, ship zip, the rebate screen already shows your home address where the Visa Rebate gets mailed to, that’s where the card goes, so it doesn’t matter

For those who live in tax free states, it is worth it to buy the mcafee in store as you will then receive 5% back in rewards (assuming you are premier). For those who don’t live in a tax free state, buy the downloaded version online and make your shipping address to one of the tax free states, which will save you in tax more than the 5% back in rewards.
As a side note, has anyone noticed that Staples does not carry Kaspersky anymore?
-
Just a heads up to all. In the past download version rebate always show up as “INVALID UPC” after the validation process. If that occurs with this item. just do a chat with the rebate center to get it fixed. YOU MUST take action it won’t get fixed by itself.

stupid question but if I actually wanted to use the software, where is it downloaded to?? Does it come to my email?
-
@juicer yes, you are emailed a link to download it from. The link is good for a long time. so if you currently have an AV program installed that doesn’t expire for 8 months, you can wait til that one is ‘up’ to download the McAfee you bought from Staples today.

In the rare chance you want to use the software, Office Depot was giving these away for free today at the registers in both of my stores–one year license-
