Of course neither our cat’s food nor litter is 20% off. Figures.
-
@mtnagel mine are never available for their “special deals” either. The only offer that I redeemed recently was the 4x points because that wasn’t brand dependent.

I stopped shopping at petsmart when we switched our dog from instinct raw to primal, which they don’t carry. Plus PetSuppliesPlus had great coupons, which have now mostly dried up.

@dangeruss if you are feeding raw consider making your own at home. Much cheaper than buying it.

Is it? How can I make sure it has the proper vitamins and that’s its free of bacteria?
-
@dangeruss Research online for a recipe. I can tell you about cats but not dogs. As far as being free of bacteria, that’s on you. You have to keep meat refrigerated. I buy from the supermarket and I’m trusting that there’s no bacteria in what they’re selling. I buy chicken thighs when on sale, look for the freshest by date, prepare the food then freeze it in serving sizes. I’ve been doing it for a few years. I bought a good meat grinder to grind the chicken bones (calcium). I get salmon oil from Rite Aid, vitamin E, taurine and B complex from Amazon. If I were buying canned it would cost me $4+ per feeding. I make 7 feedings for ~ $10. The only problem is that the cats don’t love the taste of the raw diet so I have to add a little canned Purina.
Some people use Ziploc bags for their homemade food. I use Mason jars. They can go in the dishwasher. I like that I’m not adding packaging to the landfill.![0_1687550819802_IMG_20230623_160103859.jpg](Uploading 100%)

@my4mainecoons
This thing is $25 (less after coupons) and lasts me 12 days. Before we were using instinct and it was even cheaper. We usually get lamb or salmon/sardine or venison.I’d be hard pressed to make it cheaper myself, and it sounds like it’s a lot of work.

@dangeruss. If only $2/day then keep doing what you’re doing. IDK how much your dog eats. We use 15 oz. of food per feeding so 30 oz./day. Maybe your dog weighs less. My 4 weigh 72 lbs altogether.

I’ve got a tiny 7lb Pom, so it doesn’t make sense for me, but definitely makes sense once you have bigger dogs.

@dangeruss My smallest cat weighs 14 lbs.
