PAYPAL: Deceptive Change to cashing out $$ to your bank
-
Paypal has changed their set up when you go to transfer money from your account (say you got paid $20 for a rebate) to your linked bank account.
The request screen now auto defaults to ‘instant’ transfer where they charge a fee to transfer, it used to go to the screen where you could choose. You must decline and click through to the classic screen to choose 1-3 days option with no fee. Pretty shady on their part and many people will hit that button in error and get charged by paypal for a service that’s free if you want it to be.
-
@mistercheap it only takes a second to read the screen and confirm what you are doing. People really should be doing that.
-
@q-shopper reading (and reading comprehension) are fundamental.
-
@sonofzeus I am completely convinced most coupon shoppers have not mastered those skills!

Sorry but lecturing people isn’t the point of this post. The same screen to x’fer money to your bank has been used by Paypal for years, now they DELIBERATELY set it up where you are given no choice at first pass but to click their button that charges the fee. It is very easy to make that error OR if you are new to paypal or you’re not prepared for the change and that’s the point of this post.
The intent of paypal is to click bait people into getting charged for the transfer and I have no doubt some have already made that error. All the power to you if you’re aware, as I am, but this is a community to share info and that’s what I’ve done.

I am a very good coupon shopper and I appreciate the information. I don’t transfer very often so screens are constantly changing, for appearance, for “ease of use”, etc. No, I don’t stop to read them each time they change.
-
@mistercheap I was not lecturing anyone. Just stating the obvious.

Obvious to you perhaps. You’d be surprised how even the best of us can make the mistake of not looking closely at something like that. I stand by my title that even if obvious, it is deliberately deceptive on their part to trick people.

I’m a very frequent PP transfer guy.
Noticed the change many days ago.
Shrugged and told self: “Change default to free option”.
Didn’t feel the need to announce/editorialize here.
Caveat emptor…always/everywhere.

@sonofzeus
I noticed this change a few days ago.How do I change my transfer option default setting to free option?
-
@bucktownboy I change the default to free option every time I make a transfer. PITA but necessary.

so you can’t change the default. you have to manually make the switch each and every time you x’fer money out. The default is permanently set and why I posted the OP.
-
@sonofzeus Thank you. I was thinking changing to a “default option” would automatically switch my account to transfer funds using the free option every time. Apparently not with PayPal.
-
Just made a transfer and my defaulted to the free option like it always has. Wonder why we see different things? This was in Chrome on a laptop if that matters.
