@harperr Some people may not want it, but getting a Staples More card is a “free” alternative for the Premier status.
I went ahead and got a Staples More Personal card. I guess I don’t have to worry about spending $1,000 a year now.

@harperr When you’ve checked your Rewards Center has it been showing you that you were close to the $1K? Do you recall what its said?
I just checked my Rewards Center and it was downgraded to Base. So I Chatted. It took a bit but after checking with a Rewards Specialist I was told Thanks for waiting. I have requested your account to be updated and the status has already been changed from Base to Premier… We have checked your purchases though, and it exceeds $1000.
On Rewards Center it says Rewards member since: 12/07/00
So I asked if that meant my Rewards year was 12/7 - 12/6. Yes. So I must have told myself that I needed to spend the $1K by the end of October to make sure I did it in time. Here are the contradictions that I found on my Rewards Center:
- It showed that I’d spent $991.46 from January 1.
- It showed that I still needed to spend $26.84 to earn Premier. (Until I looked today it had said how much I had to spend to earn Elite.)
If I’ve spent $991.46 since Jan. 1 why would I need to spend $26.84 to earn Premier? Why not $8.56?
In October it said that I needed to spend $8.56 to earn Premier. I spent $64.99 knowing that would put me over the $1K.
If my “year” runs Dec.7-Dec.6 why had I been Premier all of 2021 and it changed before the end of my “year”? If I had not spent $1K yet I have until 12/6/21 to do it.Bottom Line Go over your account and make sure they haven’t screwed it up.
I guess I haven’t been a Premier member since the end of September if it goes based on the date you joined Staples Rewards. I think the Year-to-date summary is based on the 2021 calendar year so it is a bit confusing.

@harperr Maybe use Staples gc via giftcards.com to purchase Plus for 2021 while you work on regaining Premier. With a discount of at least 25% on the g.c. + cb it would be < $37.50 to be able to recycle 20/mo.
They used to send out emails telling us “You have spent $xx towards Premier”. That’s probably what prompted me to call CS the year that I learned my anniversary date. I must have upped my spending because I can’t recall a year where I didn’t have Premier.Seemed like I reasonable idea so I tried it. It doesn’t look like it will take gift cards as payment for the Staples Plus membership. I get a “PaymentInformation’s PaymentType is not valid, PaymentType: [null]” error when I try to check out. I even added another item to the cart to try and “trick” it but I still get the same error. I may have to resort to Paypal to get 5% back using a Chase Freedom card.
UPDATE: “Staples Plus membership program cannot be purchased using PayPal. Please use a credit card to complete the purchase.”

@my4mainecoons I had been Premier but I guess I’m not anymore. I always thought the year was based on calendar year. I guess I was wrong on that. Here was their reply:
"I’m investigating your inquiry regarding our Staples Premier Rewards program. Postage stamps, prepaid phone cards, gift cards, taxes, and shipping fees do not count toward earning Rewards or towards maintaining Premier status. Qualifying spending for upgrade is the amount paid at checkout after application of all coupons, discounts, instant savings, and Rewards redemptions. Your account shows a total purchase amount of $609.98 after total discounts of $846.98 for the date range 11/09/2020 - 11/08/2021. This caused your account to be set to Rewards Base+. "
It would have been nice to get some notice that my Rewards level would be changing. Oh well.

Does Staples use the calendar year for determining Rewards purchases? I got the e-mail this morning about the Pre-Black Friday Deals saying I was a Premier member. I go to Staples.com to order some ink and it says I am a Base+ member. Staples chat said “Because we count the Rewards annually, we are at last quarter of the year.” When I pushed back a little they said “Let me forward this issue to a Rewards specialist so they could look into it. Please expect a response to your inquiry within the next business day.”
