SLOOOOW Windows 10 laptop

Well I stayed with Win7 as long as possible but updated 2 laptops a day or so before the Jan 14 free Win 10 upgrade expired.
Problem is that in 2018 I bought a factory rebuilt "HP 17.3” HD+ WLED- Backlit Intel Quad Core N3710 8GB 2TB HDD Windows 10 Laptop."
I HATED IT! My Win7 laptops ran at least 3X faster than the Win10. So when my 2 Win10 upgraded laptops STILL ran much faster than the more recent rebuild, I started to try to find out why, updated all HP drivers and freshest BIOS, ran multiple testing programs, even CrystalDiskMark, and a complete restore. Long story short, UNHAPPY.

    Suggestion, guesses, jokes? HELP!

  • Saying a device is slow is too general to be helpful. Please be more specific. Is it slow opening websites? Is it slow booting up? Is it slow opening up programs? Recommendations will differ, depending on your answers.

A factory rebuilt device that never worked properly and on which all reasonable troubleshooting attempts by a competent user have failed?

Sounds like you inherited someone else’s nightmare (the factory either repackaged it without repairs or performed a sub-par repair).

I’d return it ASAP rather than risk wasting hours on a potentially un-repairable lemon and/or missing the return window.

  • It’s a pretty slow CPU with not a huge amount of memory.
Check “Task Manager” to see utilization during the slow times to see if anything is maxed out.

    All of the above.
    Thanks for your reply.

Problem. I’ve had it for nearly 2yrs now. I really thought it was that I hated W10 so much. I knew that W7 would be gone one
day. I really hadn’t thought much of it 'til I upgraded the W7s to W10. My BF’s grandson got a full ride Computer Science at
North TX in Denton, so when he has time he can probably tell whether to write it off or not.
    Thanks.

Well, it wasn’t meant for anything harder than Inet surfing. And, as I said, it’s ALL SLOW.
There is no fast. Even my TV boxes run faster.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • If you are at the point of experimenting, I’d wipe the drive and try a fresh install of Windows 10. I’ve had pretty good results doing so and have had it run pretty decently on an old dual-core AMD processor with 3GB RAM. I did use a small SSD however which did add some speed over a mechanical HD.

I was thinking the same thing… after reformatting. However, I’d first swap out the hard drive with one from a correctly functioning PC to first confirm/isolate whether the issue is with the hard drive/software. If a known working drive also runs super slow in the factory rebuilt HP, reformatting the drive and reinstalling the OS probably won’t do anything since there’s likely a hardware issue elsewhere.
