Is it possible to add a Sort by new threads?
-
@rsuaver this is an option in a forum (drop down is top right, above the threads) and there is also a button to view the new threads (looks like a paper tray, second icon from the left) on the top bar.
-
@jaytrader When I select “Newest to Oldest” it puts on top the thread that has the newest posts within it. Was trying to mimic the “Sort recent topic” option in FW.
Also, the “paper tray” icon is for unread, but it’s for every category, some of which I may not necessarily be interested in.
TIA

I see. Strange, I’ve never had a need for that on a forum before, since I cared about replies more than original thread dates. For instance, some of those long ass threads on FWF date back a decade, but get regular replies. If I filtered how you wanted it, that thread (although it had new replies) would be at the bottom of the list. I will take a look into it, while I am looking at some plugins as well. I’ll get back to you!
Thanks.

@rsuaver
Yes, even the “recent” icon (clock) sorts by newest thread posts and not new items. I hope it’s changed soon, or we’re given an option to choose.
-
I’m with rsuaver - at least in part. For Hot Deals and Free Stuff I just care about new topics (generally), whereas for Finance, I care about both. I usually would view one view (recent topics), then switch to the other (recent messages). I really would like both options, and the ability to go back and forth.

is it possible to list the topics in any given category by most recent topic instead of by using order of replies?

So, you want to also be able to sort by the date a thread was created, in the order they were posted (newest to oldest and vice versa)? I’d like to see that too. I hope that that is something easy for @dangeRuss to enable.

There is a plug in that does this, but it’s not quite ready for prime time.
-
I would also like a sort-by option that sorts by posting date. I don’t care when or if any replies are made, I keep track of threads by the date they are initially posted.

where it says sort by newest to oldest It shows newest replies first. I would like to get the newest threads first - is that possible? Please.
There seems to be a plugin that enables that, but when I tried to enable it, the forum went down. I will test on a dev instance and see if I can get it working.

I’ve just visited your “Hot Deals” area for the first time, and I’ve looked over 5 pages of the deals.
With the way the threads are sorted, with the ones having recent replies being at the top of the heap, instead of the most recent threads that were posted being at the top, in the future I don’t think that I’ll have the patience to continue to sift through the pages of Hot Deals – as it continues to grow and grow – to try to figure out what threads I’ve already seen the title of, and what threads are new to me.
(I saw the earlier suggestion in this “support” thread of looking at the “unread” button that is up at the top of the template, but when I skim the thread titles of Hot Deals, I do not open each and every thread, I only open the ones that I am interested in, so, for me, having a list of “unread” threads is nearly the same as just looking at the jumble of threads in the Hot Deals forum itself, and that is not a workaround to not being able to sort threads by their posting date.)
I do appreciate that you are looking into the issue, and there is a plugin that is not working well with your set-up.

The difference with the unread list is that you can click the “All Topics” button at the top, and then select to see only “New Topics.” Once done with the new threads list, you can choose “Watched Topics” only to see what’s going on in threads you chose to follow… and/or go back to seeing all topics and clear the inbox by selecting “All” under the “Mark as Read” button or marking threads read in forums that are of no interest to you.

I appreciate that this is an option. Of course, I want more. Is it possible to have either:
- The default set to show “New Topics” or
- Once we choose to only see New Topics in a forum, that PWF (is that the correct short form), remembers our choice for future visits to that forum.
I realize that this is pretty far down the list of things to do, but if I see that #%&* Planters Peanuts post one more time …
Thanks, and also thanks for all the work that you guys are putting in.

I don’t know, so let’s bring this to @dangeRuss’ attention.
Also, today is National Nut Day so no knocking nuts today please (not even honorary ones).
-
this plugin may do it, there is a newest to oldest already , but I want newest posts in category, not by newest replies.

I’m slowly getting up to speed with writing plug-ins. There is a sort by thread posted date plugin, but it doesn’t seem to work quite right and I’m trying to figure out why.
As for the nuts thing, maybe it’s time to move that post to expired deals, as it’s currently OOS?
-
@frugalfreak I don’t think that plugin will sort by thread date, but should sort by votes, assuming it works with the latest version.
-
It is still live for some nuts
-
I too like to see the newest threads first but I do appreciate the effort putting this new site together.

That’s just great. So now my mother-in-law has her own holiday? I’ll never hear the end of it.
-
Thanks guys. Again, it’s not crucial for me now. When we start getting more HD topics, ordering by topic will be very helpful.
-
@honkinggoose
This feature is now live!
-
Much better now - being able to view by newest topics rather than newest reply. Thanks dangeRuss!!
-
@dangeruss Someone should put the change in announcements.
-
@mrsguin @dangeruss I nominate the always in style penquin.
-
The announcement has now been posted.

I’m now marking this thread resolved, but feel free to continue discussing this topic here (or to let us know if any part of the OP’s request is not in fact resolved/there are issues with the new feature).

@dangeRuss
Thank you so much. And now there are no more nuts. Oh, if it were only that easy. “:-)”

Oops! I meant no more Planters Nuts.
