Staples Ink Recycling PSA - increase in spending (from $30 to $50) required starting 6/2/22

  • Dear Staples Rewards® Member,

Thank you for being a Staples Rewards member. We would like to inform you of the updated Terms and Condition to the Ink & Toner Recycling program beginning on June 2, 2022 (view updated Staples Rewards Terms here). The minimum spend requirement for earning ink recycling will change from $30 to $50.

The Ink & Toner Recycling program terms and conditions include the following: Each Member is eligible to receive Ink and Toner Recycling Rewards (“Recycling Rewards”) on ink and toner recycling, as described below, performed at Staples U.S. stores or online at staples.com/rewards, if the Member has spent at least $50 in ink and/or toner purchases at Staples over the previous 180 days. Ink and/or toner purchases made on the date of recycling are included toward minimum purchase requirement. Coupons, taxes, rewards redemptions, and shipping charges do not count towards the $50 minimum purchase requirement. Ink + Toner Resellers and remanufacturers, including companies or individuals that purchase goods with the intention of selling the goods to a third party, are strictly prohibited from earning and redeeming Ink and Toner Rewards. Limit of 10 ink or toner cartridges can be recycled per month.

Thank you for being a Staples® customer and a member of the Staples Rewards program. We value and appreciate your business.

    -The Staples Rewards Team

Effective today, so not opportunity to buy ink or toner before the change.

  • I looked at my account a couple days ago for the end of my 180 days, it was blank. I thought it was a glitch. Now I know why.🙁 Plus the ink rewards went down to 20% this week after being stuck at 30% for awhile.

There is always Office Depot for ink recycling. They just require a $10 purchase each month on almost anything (except for gift cards, of course) and that can easily be met by buying FAR batteries they offer about every other week. Of course, they limit the carts you can recycle though to 10 a month.

    wow, this is really bullS****.

Typical staples, no advance warning given. I take it this applies for people in the staples plus program too who paid $50 to join it?

Oh well, spending $50 on ink to get $120 in rewards just isn’t worth it anymore IMO unless perhaps they give back 50% in rewards on ink at some point.

I hear you. I have no regrets for leaving Staples ink recycling program. Office Depot gives me plenty of rewards to spend.

In hindsight, definitely glad I didn’t spend the $50 on Staples Plus again. I could deal with the $30 spend with 30% back in rewards to get $120 in rewards every six months, but $50 outlay just doesn’t seem worth it anymore. Not to mention, no balance Q’s, and the short expiration of the rewards, can’t even save them up towards a larger ticket item.

The numbers should be: $40 x 7 = $280 rewards for $50 ink. Premier status is free with the Staples More account.

I already stopped participating in the recycling program a few months ago. Got tired of looking for things to buy every month just to use up the rewards.

No, for purposes of my account, the #'s are correct. I’m at base level. If I were earning $40 per month vs $20 maybe I’d hang on. But I’d have to join the Staples Plus thing at $50 to earn $40, so oop would be $150 to earn $480 per year. Now, that’s not a bad return per se, but I’ve become unsettled by Staples continual reduction of benefits and no advance warning on changes with policy changes, not to mention no balance coupons which can be a pain in the butt.

If they run a really good promo on ink (say 50% back, maybe even 40% in rewards) I might bite on the $50 but until then just going to do the OD program and stay on the sidelines.
