UPDATE! REAL ID compliant Identification required for US Domestic Air pushed back to May 2025
-
-
AFAIK an expired US Passport is sufficient for domestic USA travel.
-
For the past few years one has had to appear in person at the DMV to renew drivers licenses. Now I understand why.
-
This is Orwellian.

So do you have to participate?“None of this facial recognition technology is mandated,” said Lim. “Those who do not feel comfortable will still have to present their ID — but they can tell the officer that they do not want their photo taken, and the officer will turn off the live camera.” There are also supposed to be signs around informing you of your rights.
But does it mean you’ll get moved to a slow line, get an extra pat down, or a mark on your record? “You should have no derogatory experience based on you exercising your right,” said Lim. If you suspect that has happened, the TSA says you should ask to speak to a manager.

I really don’t understand this real id thing. I thought the driver’s license I’ve been carrying for yrs is a real ID. What’s the new feature of the newly required DL/ID?

My state switched to Real IDs about 10 years ago.
Each state had been setting its own requirements for verifying identification for driver’s licenses. The Real ID requires that all states follow a single set of standardized criteria, set by the Department of Homeland Security.

What is Real ID?
Real ID, in general terms, refers to the federal legislation intended to deter terrorism by implementing several new homeland security regulations. The rules establish the minimum standards, procedures, and requirements that must be met if a state-issued driver’s license or identification card is to be accepted by the Federal government for official purposes. Official purposes, as defined by the rules, include:
- Entering a nuclear power facility
- Entering a Federal building and
- Boarding a federally regulated airplane
The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) established these minimum standards in with the REAL ID Act of 2005. These regulations set standards for all states to meet the requirements of the REAL ID Act, including, but not limited to:
- Security features that must be incorporated into each state driver’s license or identification card
- Verification of information provided by applicants to establish their identity and lawful status in the United States
- Physical security standards for locations where licenses and identification cards are issued

Yes and no, not all states moved their full D/L programs over to be Real ID. Pennsylvania is one such state. Regular issued DL’s are NOT REAL ID compliant, you have to get a special/more expensive ReadlD d/l instead of the standard one and it’s time consuming because you have to go in person to a designated center and pay the fee in addition to what you already may have paid on your current license. Not sure what other states have been slow to conform, but I’m sure PA is not the only one.
I can guarantee it will be a mess come May with people showing up to fly with non REAL ID credentials.

@mistercheap yes, I found out our state is now advising people who travels to get the new dl (with a star on the DL). Heard takes long time to get it. So I’m just taking my passport instead when traveling.

bump for update.

@mistercheap Of course they did. I’ve been debating getting one here in Kentucky but they are expensive. Kentucky is one of those states that got exemption after exemption. Now I can delay until my actual license is set to expire.
