Found this link on Reddit: AMEX pt offer
You must pay using at least $1 in AMEX Membership Reward points. Supposedly the maximum offer is 50% off (max $80 off). However, my offer is 40% off (max $40 off).
Here is how my offer is worded: “Add eligible products sold and shipped by Amazon.com¹ to your shopping cart and get 40% off, up to $40. To redeem the full value of the promotional offer, add eligible products totaling at least $100 to your shopping cart. Promotion can be redeemed in one or more transactions for a total discount of up to $40.”

Maybe that answers my question that you must pay at least one dollar in American Express rewards points. I placed my order on November 29 and I only paid one penny in rewards points towards my purchase and at the time it looked like the order was gonna work and the discount came off but then shortly there after I noticed it said I paid by gift card and the amount I paid went up by $40 so I guess they kicked off the promotion because I only paid one penny in rewards
That was a fast one they pulled. I didn’t see anywhere where it said you had to pay at least one dollar in rewards. Before when they had these offers several times I paid one penny and it worked out fine.
I called Amazon customer service today to find out why my payment method was switched from my American Express card to my gift card balance and why my promotion didn’t come off and nobody could give me a straight answer. Finally, the third person said that she would credit my account with $45 promotional gift car to make up for it. But she said it would post within two hours. It has been 5 hours since then now and I’ve yet to see it post to my account. Hopefully it will. Another option I have since the item hasn’t shipped yet id I can go and change payment method and change it back to my American Express card and this time pay one dollar in points instead of one penny and see if the promotion will come off or not
I just went back to my order and I tried to change the payment method and it lets me change it back to the American Express card, but it says I can’t apply my shop with points balance to this order so since they’re not letting me apply my shop with points balance to the order then I think I will just hope that the Customer Service $45 credit actually materializes

I have 40% too. Thanks for the HU re:$1 minimum. The other times I’ve done this I used 1¢ in points.
Only problem now is coming up with something to buy. Everything I want is shipped by Amazon but not sold by Amazon.

Yeah, I also have trouble finding items shipped and sold by Amazon. But there is something I found that is shipped&sold by Amazon, and that caused me to search for a CC deal (cause there are always CC deals at xmas time). So I was pleasantly surprised to find something.

I’ve tried this for years, when I have a deal on Amazon, on bargain sites, for AMEX.
It says no deal, on AMEX Membership . I don’t even try it again!
-
Just a follow up to what I wrote yesterday. Amazon customer service gave me a $25 courtesy credit and they said the other $20 they can give me as soon as the item ships so they are refunding me the $40 I should’ve got from the promotional credit plus the extra tax liability that I had to pay since the credit didn’t post correctly And she gave me a free $1.30 for my trouble and trouble it was I think I had to call about five times to get that credit

yes Mr. V, the minimum in points you needed to redeem for the offer to work was indeed in the original T&C when you activated it. I had the offer too, had no issues because I redeemed the required # of points.
-
@mistercheap Color me stupid, but I can’t see a way to split payment between two payment methods. Could someone point me in the right direction, please?

-
@zerenia I couldn’t figure out how to do it either so I ended up paying with Amex even though I have lots of gc.
I had a $15 credit so my cart was $115.xx. Both the $15 and the $40 came off.
I also have a $10/$75 if paying with Discover Rewards.
-
@MISTERCHEAP Yes, that may be. I need to learn to read the terms better, but it was easy to miss as before, for the longest time, you could redeem only 1 cent in Am Ex rewards and it would go through just fine. This new change is a recent change and easy to be overlooked.
It looks like the offer is still on my account as it got kicked off my last order. Maybe I should not try to get the other $20 back after my order ships and just use the offer on a $100 gift card instead.

@cheapcharlie9 Third party cards aren’t sold by Amazon.

I vaguely remember buying gift cards like to Albertsons and such using offers similar to this in the past and I got my discount but who knows maybe things have changed now on that front also. I’m willing to do $100 gamble at a grocery store because I would spend the money there anyway so it’s worth a try. I think, as long as the discount shows on your order before you submit then you should most likely get it for that price. I think the reason the current offer didn’t work for me is I only paid a penny with rewards rather than a dollar so they probably kicked out that payment method completely and reverted back to my store gift card balance. At least that’s my working theory the interesting thing is the discount showed up before I hit submit so I haven’t quite figured that out yet.
-
@mrvietnam I looked at gift cards but ended up buying groceries instead. It was a better deal for me to get e.g. 40% off Great Grains cereal than an Albertsons gc to pay supermarket sale price. I used to get Great Grains at RA.

I’m not quite understanding what you’re saying that you bought groceries instead. I was talking about redeeming the American Express offer. So how could you buy groceries without getting a grocery gift card from Amazon?
By the way, I like Great Grains cereal too. It’s only $1.99 a box this week at CVS. Thanks for reminding me. I think I’ll pick up some boxes today on the way home from work
-
@mrvietnam I bought grocery items on Amazon including a couple of boxes of GG. I searched for items I needed then for Amazon as the seller. With the $40 off it was a better deal than I can get at WM. I also bought Asian groceries that aren’t available locally. Thanks for the HU re: CVS. I never go there. Can I just buy them for $1.99 or is that deal price?

Yes you can just buy them for $1.99. That’s the sale price no extra bucks involved.
So did you use Amazon Fresh? Is there an extra charge for shipping when you use Amazon Fresh? I’m a prime member
How much were great grains going for on Amazon
-
@mrvietnam now I’m sad that I bought GG on Amazon, lol. $2.59 with 40% off vs. $3.99 on sale at Shaw’s.
IDK what Amazon Fresh is. I don’t have prime. I bought canola oil, sesame oil, soy sauce, GG, glutinous sweet rice and chili garlic sauce.
Canola oil is $4.57 at WM. $4 less 40% on Amazon.
Huy Fong chili garlic sauce is on sale for $6.79 at WM (???) $2.49-40% on Amazon.

Yeah the $1.99 price at CVS is a great deal. I plan on stocking up maybe with a dozen boxes if I can find that many in stock.
-
@mrvietnam when does the sale end? No banana available for pick up. I went through Rakuten for 10% cb.

These offers are somewhat fool proof, it will reflect in your total, so if you’ve done something wrong (say too few points redeemed), no credit gets applied and your total is your red flag. Unlike Amex Offers that you get back AFTER the fact, these are immediate discounts.
And yes, gift cards are the way to go, however they have to be plastic ones, not EGC’s as those aren’t considered ‘sold by AMZ’ where these offers go.

Not exactly fool proof for me, MC. The $40 was reflected in the subtotal before I submitted my order and it showed that I was getting $40 off with the American Express offer, but sometime after I placed my order the promotion was kicked off and it reverted to my gift card so it’s not exactly fool proof. That’s the whole reason why I challenged it because it showed it was coming off before I submitted and then sometime later the offer got kicked off my order, so why wouldn’t you complain about it?.

Thats very strange @MrVietnam , did you go back and make any changes to your cart before final screen checkout? Did you possibly have your gift card set to default payment?
It’s likely it was a fluke glitch of some kind, but honestly I’ve done these CC points offers on AMZ for years and never had an issue like the one you describe. Glad you got it resolved.

https://www.amazon.com/gcx/Gift-Cards/gfhz/category?categoryId=gift-cards&language=en_US&tag=phtwllt-20I am a close friend of MrVietnam and what he tells me is he bought a $60 Albertson’s e-gift card (they do not offer Albertsons physical gift cards on Amazon) and a $50 Golden Corral gift card (for $40 after the $10 off $50 purchase deal on select gift cards). He got $110 of gift cards in all for only $57 after the Am Ex promo and he is happy with that 48% off on two stores he actually shops at. He also had an Am Ex offer clipped that gave him 500 Am Ex rewards points for an Amazon purchase of $50 or more. 500 points is worth $3 and change I think when converted for payment at Amazon. MrVietnam usually does not shop much at Albertsons due to their high prices, but every once in a while they have sales that bring him into the store. Case in point, yesterday they had 2 Thrifty ice cream 1.5 quart tubs for $5. Thrifty brand ice cream at Rite Aid now is about $7 each, maybe more. So using that Friday only deal along with the $5 Fresh Pass credit for December, he got 6 tubs of quality ice cream for only $10.

I think what happened the first time around I attempted the deal I paid with only one cent in rewards and possibly Am Ex does not allow you to do that anymore, so they kicked off the rewards usage and for some reason unknown went to my gift card balance instead. I am not worried about it anymore as I have been more than fairly compensated for this deal. Note to self: remember going forward $1 is the minimum amount you can redeem in Am Ex reward points. For the longest time you could get these promos by only redeeming one cent, but no more.
The funny thing is on the checkout screen it clearly said that I would be getting the $40 discount. It was itemized there, but I think once the system realized I only used a cent to pay in rewards they kicked it off. Must have been a fluke glitch as you say but they gave me $25 for my trouble so all is good, since I was able to do the deal again buying something else and it worked for me flawlessly.
