It comes with starter cartridges for black and CMY color. If you set your printer settings to only ever print in black and white, you should never run out of color and need to replace the color cartridges.

Been a Brother user for years, very satisfied. this printer uses cheap generic inks, you save a fortune. look on Ebay or Amazon for them.

It cleans the cartridges frequently and does use up the ink. Not all brother printers print with empty cartridges, even if you are not using the color. On the plus side, the cartridges are really cheap and the color ones come in one pack instead of buying each individual color.
