You know what I miss? The Vegas $20 dollar trick Thread from FW!
-
This is one of the threads I really used to enjoy on Fatwallet in the Travel forum. It used to here, I think. Does anyone have the old one cached?
So what do you folks say? Let’s bring it back! I found the format in a google search, so I’ll start!
Hotel: Flamingo
Date: Jan 2016
Time: About 8pm
Airport or Hotel Check-in: Hotel
Clerk Gender: F
Clerk Age Aprox.: mid-late 20’s
Tip Amount: $20
Success?: Yes
Reserved Room: Dirt cheap room from some online booking site (don’t remember exactly). Room with no view on maybe the 6-8th floor.
Upgraded To: 20th floor with strip view, newly remodeled.Booked online for really really cheap. Only tried this because of the old Fatwallet thread was so interesting. I had to try it. Had prepped a 20 between my ID and credit card earlier. Handed it to the person and it disappeared like magic without a flinch. She checked for me and apologized that lots of the nicer suites were already booked. I still ended up with a sizable upgrade to a much higher floor with a nice view, recently remodeled.

This was a great thread.
I do this but I show the money more or less openly. Guess I don’t want them to pocket the $20 and then smarmily say “Sorry Sir, we’re all sold out.”
Not sure if there’s much I could do at that point.

An online FW archive is linked here: https://phatwalletforums.com/topic/734/fatwallet-archive
I believe this is the thread you’re referring to:

So the “$20 trick” still works? Nice to know. It’s been around for a LONG time, so is $20 still enough?
I would love to see recent experiences.

I think at that point you ask for change for your $20
