No More PLENTI POINTS at Rite Aid in 2018

  • 500 Club

Ad for week 12/31-1/6/18 shows no longer earning Plenti Points.
New product is rolling out called Bonus Cash.
Will still be able to pay with Plenti Points, just won’t be earning new PP.

This isn’t a HD per se but didn’t want it to get lost in Deal Discussion or Grocery/Drug Store.

  • Global Moderator

@MrVietnam Major Wow. Is the bonus cash just a new year promo? if so, maybe the points earn will return? Can’t imagine you could redeem points at RA if they were no longer in the Plenti Program as of 1/1.

  • Global Moderator

@my4mainecoons sorry, tagged mr.v by mistake.

  • Well it had to end eventually.

  • I received a notice from Direct Energy that they are no longer using Plenti Points, starting in 1/18, they are ending it 12/17. Now RA, makes you wonder who’s next?

I’m gonna be so screwed once they stop accepting it exxon.

  • I foresee many trips to Macy’s, Chili’s, and ExxonMobil in the near future for many of our forum members.

Bonus cash–says its only earned at Ra and can only be used at RA! So no more option of cashing out at other stores, like Macys and gas stations…

Here is the e-mail that store managers received.

Here is the front page of the 12/31 - 1/6 Rite Aid weekly ad.

    Thx okdeal/sd

  • @mrvietnam I meant for people with large Plenti balances.

  • so how do they apply it? Does it go on your Plenti card? Can’t see the fine print. But we can still use our PP for stuff at RA I suppose.

Yes, starting 12/31/17 you will no longer be able to earn Plenti points anymore at Rite Aid, but you can still redeem Plenti points for Rite Aid purchases, along with other Plenti partners.

Got a letter in the mail today. it says the plenti credit card is being discontinued…

Makes you wonder with so many companies leaving Plenti and them doing away with the Plenti credit card if they are continuing the Plenti program for much longer. Between my two Plenti accounts I have some $700 in points. not a small chunk of change. I’ve done well using them down. I n just several months I took it from an all-time high combined balance of $1,200 down to just $700.

  • I feel pretty certain Amex is killing Plenti especially if the credit card is being dropped. And frankly without Rite-Aid earnings, I am not sure I would expect to really earn much from Exxon Mobil and the others.

I feel confident that Amex will have a way to pay out the balances from Plenti if it came to that, but it seems they need to cutoff earnings as fast as possible. That being said, seems like it is a good idea to keep redeeming. I have a double whammy as my state will have no Rite Aids at some point next year (WG takeover).

I guess we will all find out together what is the fate of Plenti early next year sometime. Maybe they will try to survive by attracting new companies to participate. I wonder if Plenti would have to pay out the balances of Plenti accounts or not if they discontinued the program. If you notice, they call them Plenti POINTS, not Plenti DOLLARS. The points themselves probably have no monetary value and it probably says that in the Plenti terms and conditions. But the mass exodus of companies participating is very telling that something is brewing in Plentiland.

  • from my vantage point as a MSer for about 4 years, all the good deals die when these big corp. realize they are getting gamed by a few players. I feel Amex killed this because they are subsidizing the PP program. They have done this with their 5 % no fee Old Blue cash card (after a few years). There are folks that have 4 or 5 of these cards. They put a 55600 yearly cap, but they are still cracking down. Now they have a crew checking all the purchases on these cards looking for MSers. They are starting to NOT pay out the 5%, I hear from a few sources. These cards are money losers for them, but it takes them a year or to two to figure it out. They never had Amex employees checking purchases but now they are. Even tho the T&C stated gift cards are not eligible fort 5 % back, they are enforcing it now. In retrospect, our members are “abusing” the PP system and they are stopping it.

  • BTW, is it possible to use PP wyb a gift card from Kohls/Home Depot etc? I know you can’t use PP for RA gift cards but do PP work with these gift cards?

By the rules you cannot buy ANY gift card (RA or Kph;s/Home Depot, etc. ) using Plenti points. The register will not allow it. However, there is a runaround if you use a lot of manufacturer coupons. In that case you can buy a gift card for the amount of manufacturer coupons you used in an order and it will take from your Plenti points to pay for it.

Don’t forget that Plenti points can be used at Riteaid.com, so if anyone has still has points when their RA stores go away, that will still be an option.

And every week is a percent-off code, usually 20% - 25% off and occasionally as much as 30%.

Unfortunately , the kicker with Riteaid.com is their $35 minimum order to get free shipping. And L2C coupons sometimes work, sometimes don’t 😞

I’ve used PP to buy Petsmart, Petco, Amazon, Kohls, Sears, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Shell, Mobil and RA gc in the past year. I bought $50 RA gc’s this past week with PP. You have to know what you’re doing and have cashiers who let you tell them what to do, lol.

  • My hunch why RiteAid is dropping Plenti Points is because after earning the points, you don’t have have to go back to Rite Aid to spend them, you’ve always had several other options of places to spend them.
RiteAid looks at CVS’s Extrabucks where you’re forced to go back and and make another shopping visit to the store to use them. Or Walgreens’s Rewards the same thing.
So RiteAid is losing some return shopping traffic with the Plenti points.
Also the 2 year points expiration is great for customers because they can be saved up for a while, but that doesn’t help the next month’s sales figures the executives watch.
Of course that’s nothing RA didn’t know when they switched to Plenti. Maybe the exec’s who made the decision 3-4 years have left the company and their replacements have decided to dump it.
    Anyway, that’s just a guess.

All you did was buy gift cards in the amount of manufacturer coupons you used in a given order. No magic there. Just taking advantage of a loophole.

As for the Plenti program at large, I think there is little risk to losing your earned Plenti points. Even if Plenti decided to end the program, I am sure they would give you prior notice so you could use your points up before the program closure.

  • 500 Club

@mrvietnam Never said it was magic. I said you have to know what you’re doing. Have you done it recently?

  • Global Moderator

@MrVietnam @my4mainecoons as for Plenti ending, I think it could easily be phased out in 2018. If it’s a done deal that RA is dropping out, I’d say the writing is on the wall…sort of like the demise of FW was obvious a good year prior.

With that said, Amex is a huge company with a good reputation. They may offer a way to cash out the value of the points for gift cards, x’fer them to your Amex Membership Rewards points, etc. If they are going to force you to ‘use’ them up prior to shutting down the program, they really need to give at least 90 days notice. But my hope is they’d come up with some other ways to compensate you for the value of them short of having to spend them or lose them since they’d probably tick off a lot of people who forfeit points who don’t have a opportunity to spend them.

  • 500 Club

New program is not as friendly as Plenti.

Wellness cash is earned in an increments of 1, 5, 10 etc and can only be used the same way
Wellness cash can be redeemed 6am next day
Wellness cash has an expiration of 60 days
Customers will not be prompted to use wellness cash but it will rather be just auto applied if they met the threshold
Customers can track wellness cash only by looking at their L2C and it will be visible there with value and exp dates
If customers have both Plenti and Wellness Cash, we will still get the prompt to use Plenti points and if you select yes, first the Wellness Cash will get auto deducted and only remaining balance can be paid using plenti points.

    thanks ok1234

  • Global Moderator

@my4mainecoons well that sucks IMO, the 60 days rule is ok, better than the old +up’s which expired in 14 days but never liked the auto use feature, I kept getting the paper UPs, so I could use them as I saw fit, especially where coupon use is concerned on an order. also hope it will ‘roll’ and not impact spend total for using it on another offer with Wellness Cash. Going to miss Plenti earn at Rite Aid, especially given those points could be used elsewhere like Exxon and Macy’s.

I seriously don’t get only being able to redeem Plenti and not earn any. What’s the point? RA Might as well have dropped out of the program altogether, which I’m sure this is a precursor to.

I’d almost guarantee this was part of joining the program in the first place, some people do not have other places to redeem and need the option to spend where they earn. Regardless, can you imagine the whining and wailing if you could earn Plenti points from Rite Aid on December 30, but then on December 31 you couldn’t use them there? It would cost them a fortune in customer support to just hard terminate.

I think they are dropping out of the program. They’re just allowing shoppers to use up the points they’ve accumulated in case they don’t have somewhere else to use them.

I suspect we’ll get yet another Wellness Card, maybe a Wellness Plus card.
Maybe we’ll swipe Wellness Plus card, the system deducts what it can from that then if you still have balance due you swipe your Plenti card.

  • Global Moderator

@my4mainecoons sounds like another PITA… just bummed they are leaving Plenti, I actually liked the program and made out very well with it at Rite Aid.

  • 500 Club

@mistercheap I like it as well but I assume Plenti is losing money. Money has to be the reason companies are pulling out. Must be affecting the bottom line.

  • 500 Club

Plenti is the ONLY reason I go to Rite Aid. I started with a bonus offer transferring from Amex Reward points. Otherwise, most of the items I buy are cheaper elsewhere.

  • As long as they’ll still allow to redeem at Macy’s i’m good. I have $60 worth of points left and after i use them all at Macy’s i will then stop going to RA. It’s been almost 2 months since my last visit to RA.

  • well still no info on how long we can use the PP? I have about 400.00 worth. Most of the RA stuff is overpriced anyway, but we should be thankful for the “free items” we accumulated over the past 2 years. Hopefully Amex will let us redeem for a while, or at least xfer to the new program and then have 60 days. As I said previously, this program has cost Amex and RA tons of $ that they can’t recoup, thus the reason it’s closing. Same thing is happening with MSers on Amex Old Blue cash cards. They are actually checking for GC purchases and denying points. Currently they are not paying bonuses if you have a new card and spend X amt for bonus via ms. Haven’t touched the regular Msers yet. All these “deals” are going to hell!!

My guess is sometime early next year the Plenti program will be ending. With all these hints we are getting, the writing is on the wall. Who knows? Maybe it wasn’t Rite Aid (and all the other companies) leaving Plenti, but Plenti leaving Rite Aid (and all the other companies). It probably was not profitable for them as most decisions in business come down to dollars and cents. I guess there wasn’t enough interest by retailers in the Plenti program as they were hoping for. I am just hoping when the end does come that they give you enough of a heads up so you can use your points and there will be decent redemption options left. Being run by American Express though does make me feel better as they have excellent customer service and it would be hard for me to believe they would leave their customers unhappy. I wouldn’t be surprised if in January sometime Plenti made an announcement they were ending the Plenti program soon.

  • 500 Club

@c3 Maybe in Feb they’ll let you transfer Plenti back to Amex Membership Rewards. I don’t have Amex Membership Rewards so don’t know if that would be acceptable.

The webpage shown in the 12/31 ad is now live.
    www.riteaid.com/BonusCash

Text at the bottom of the page confirms a few basic details:

wellness+ Bonus Cash Rewards are loaded automatically to wellness+ or Plenti card only for use in-store or at riteaid.com 6AM the day after issuance, and expire after 60 days.Terms and conditions apply. See riteaid.com/rules for details.

  • Global Moderator

It is official now. As of today, 12/31, no more earning Plenti points at Rite Aid. What that means for me since I had earned 99.9% of all my points at Rite Aid, is that my Plenti point balances will not grow anymore and now just slowly shrink by redemption at mostly Rite Aid.

From the Rite Aid website today:

wellness+ Bonus Cash Rewards. wellness+ BonusCash Rewards are loaded automatically to wellness+ or Plenti card only for use in-store or at riteaid.com 6AM day after issuance, and expire after 60 days. The products on which wellness+ Bonus Cash Rewards can be earned are determined by Rite Aid, in its’ sole discretion and will change from time to time without notice. wellness+ Bonus Cash Rewards cannot be earned with the purchase of tax, shipping, tobacco products, alcohol, lottery tickets, licenses, money orders, money transfers, newspapers, stamps, other mail services, dairy products, prescription (including co-pays) paid for in whole or in part by a state or federal health care program; prescriptions (including co-pays) filled in New York, New Jersey, items distributed by Moran Foods and Save-A-Lot Food Stores, items and services distributed by RediClinic™ and items prohibited by law. wellness+ Bonus Cash Rewards cannot be used for tobacco products, alcohol, lottery tickets, licenses, money orders, money transfers, stamps, other mail services, items distributed by RediClinic™; prescriptions (including co-pays) filled in Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York, New Jersey, or Washington, and items prohibited by law.

On a side note, since Bonus Cash is all online (no printed coupons) does anyone know how to track them on the Rite Aid website? I logged into my account but see nowhere to track Bonus Cash earned or redeemed.

  • Global Moderator

I learned once you have actually earned Bonus Cash you can go to L2C and you can see it there.

@mrvietnam Nothing I want this week except 75% off Xmas candy.
I’m just watching to see what happens. Keep us posted.

  • it also stated the bonus points will be added to your plenti card. I have been using up the points. Buying gallons of milk/eggs/and vitamins. Still have about 150.00 worth between wife and myself. BTW, the senior day this week seems to be a ripoff, at least to me. My 3 stores are oos on the centrum and the shelf price is 6.99 on sale plus the senior coupon. Wm online is 4.97 for the same item. Much less of a hassle. Also Sensodyne with the senior coupon is 6.99. Wm online sells the twin pack for 11.47. BTW happy New Year to all. And for MSers… Wm has a new system rolling out for money orders but reports are that the only change is a signature now required. No need to worry.

@barrytuneup RA has a lot of “oral care” on clearance right now. Saw Sensodyne. With the SrQ and MQ its a potential MM but only if you’re into playing the game-- which you’re not.

Yes, I took advantage of that and the high value Colgate coupons last week to get about 16 different Colgate kids toothbrushes/toothpastes/etc. for free and I got about an $18.50 MM off it (between two Plenti cards). Last week they had 500 PP back when you spent $10 on oral care plus there was a $2 (200 pp) monthly deal that factored in. The neat thing about it is I could actually use what I bought, having two young children.

We have one Plenti card in my name and one in my wife’s name? It has been that way since the Plenti program started. I still have about %676 in Plenti points between the two cards, so I am hoping they get new partners in the program and stay in operation at least until I am able to drain the cards now that I won’t be earning any new points.

How many Plenti cards do you have? 6 or 7? Most of the time two cards have kept me busy enough.

  • 500 Club

@mrvietnam I have 4 cards and a friend has 4 cards. She stopped shopping in 2016 so I shopped 3 of her 4 to gold for 2017. This way if she decides to shop again she has Gold. Could have gotten her 4th to gold as well but just wasn’t feelin’ it. I had about $800 PP going into BF but I’m probably down to ~$500 over 4 cards having bought a lot of gc & Nicorette in the past month.

My stores are probably going to become Wags so I’m looking to cash out-- at a profit of course.

@mrvietnam I remember you announcing it on FW when #1 was born. If you announced #2 then I missed it-- belated congratulations!

I have to admit that I was wondering why you were buying diapers recently since by my recollection your son should have been toilet trained by now. I wondered if you were re-selling, which would have been new. Now I can quit speculating. 🙂

  • With the lack of deals at Rite Aid I really don’t see the need for more than one card for Hubby and one for me.
Long gone are the days of buying carp that isn’t used/needed just because it is on a ‘deal’. Even if only paying sales tax, useless crap is still useless.
