Staples paper ream 1 cent after coupon/rebate in store only

  • It was almost 2 years ago, when the “Staples Insiders” were telling us how paper rebates were going away. Well, the insiders were wrong and paper rebates are alive and well. Staples has a ream of paper for 1 cent after coupon/rebate in store only. You will earn 5% back in rewards (assuming you have premier) but that will be negated for most with the sales tax. However, if you are buying to donate to a tax exempt organization, you can see if they will let you use their tax exempt number.

@bbsearchlight It may not have gone away completely, but with the new limit of one coupon per transaction enforced by the registers, it really killed the ability to use paper to convert rewards to cash.

Also the reason they were saying was that staples and OM/OD were supposed to merge, but that deal didn’t happen for whatever reason (I think anti-trust laws?)

agree with @dangeRuss , I think the ‘soapbox’ about the insiders isn’t that useful to the post. Many good paper rebates have gone away (ability to do 4 per order), the days of getting free case paper after rebate and using the right online coupon applied to an instore order to even make it a MM have dried up too. Photo paper rebates have disappeared as have many of the good pen/labels/school supplies rebates Staples typically ran.

Also free after rewards items have all but disappeared, it was standard for a few years they’d offer a free a/rewards desk blotter calendar around this time of year. The insiders weren’t wrong, it is very hard to cash out rewards FULLY now on rebate items given you get ONE balance coupon and you are often forced to spend it on something you don’t necessarily need or overpay for that item.

@dangeruss I was just looking at this.
I might get the case of copy paper select, using the NI SKU coupon.
    $51.99 - $40 Rewards = $11.99 oop. (I have Staples gc to use)
    Submit for $39 SER.

Now you’re paying $12 for a case of paper… We now just let the kids go wild for the $80 a month…

@dangeruss Well my other option is to buy ink for resale. That’s a break even. Nothing I can think of buying. I could wait for Xmas stuff to go on sale but I don’t need candy. Don’t need any household products either.

How do you resell it? I used to do amazon, but they’ve now banned selling HP inks…

  • 500 Club

@dangeruss eBay. I pay about 20 (use a coupon) and sell for 28

  • @my4mainecoons
Buy 3 cases of copy select paper and pay for 2.
NI SKU coupon will give you 3 – $39 SERs.

  • 500 Club

@lenw I thought about that but I really don’t want 3 cases. I used to have more than 100 cases. Cleared them out and am down to maybe 3.

Where do you get the coupons? eBay?

  • Global Moderator

@my4mainecoons can you give a complete scenario with the math, a little confused by the cross comments on getting 3 w/ coupon.

  • 500 Club

@dangeruss coupons are from emails. They’re $20/$60 I think. I used to keep the links but lately not since I have more than I need and there’s nothing I want to buy. In today’s emails received a $5/$5 and 2 $10/$50’s. Since you can’t use them on products that have rebates haven’t had much use for them.

  • 500 Club

@mistercheap all 5 and 10 ream cases are buy 2 get 1 free in store only. The NI SKU isn’t a coupon, its a SKU so you can buy 3 cases and have cashier scan the NI SKU x 3.
Its a bit of a MM after tax but I don’t like carrying 50 lb cases let alone 3 of them.

    $51.99 x 2 + 1 case for free = $103.98 - $40 Rewards
    $63.98 oop, get back 3 @ $39 SER
    net ~ $13 MM

  • Please report back when the rebate shows up, I am interested to see if this in fact will work.
I would be afraid to try, so give up the scoop. Thanks

@my4mainecoons THANK YOU! great post, now I GET IT.

  • The paper deal will not work, just tried it and received an invalid rebate from Staples Easy Rebates.Called rebate house and he told me that the free case invalidated the rebate on every case, I have done over thousands of rebates at Staples over the years, but I think I will call it quits, it is really not worth the trouble anymore.

  • 500 Club

@theking wow. Thanks for taking one for the team. I presume you’re returning all 3 cases? There are a lot of folks on SD who are going to be bummed…

When did you purchase? Last week? Scenario was reported last week and repeated this week. Surprised others haven’t posted about invalidations.

  • Unfortunately, I can’t get the original quote from the old fatwallet forums, but the “insiders” said there would be no free after rebate or penny rebates anymore (this was 2 years ago). Since then I have gotten at least 200 paper reams for 1 cent and over 40 of the 5 ream paper cases for $1. My complaint was that people post supposed rumors which get everyone all riled up and the n turn out to be false.

And I don’t see how it being harder to use rewards money to cash out on the paper deals is any way the same as what the staples insiders were claiming - two totally different claims. We all knew that at some point Staples was going to crack down on people who are only buying stuff that they make money on and nothing else. There are still plenty of opportunities to make money on these paper deals (ie, buying staples gift cards at discounted prices from PPDG, etc.).

Give it a rest. What do you think would have happened if the Staples-Office Depot merger went through?

  • I purchased 3 cases on 12-19-17 and received the invalidation email almost immediately . called rebate center and they absolutely refused to validate.

  • will be taking all 3 cases back today. Before I purchased these and used 45.00 in reward coupons,I asked if I had to return would I get my reward coupons back.Staples said yes, so I took the gamble and lost.It would have been a great deal if it worked, but like I said it will be the last paper rebate with Staples and I have done many over the past several years.

Phew! Glad I hadn’t done this yet , sorry for the hassle @THEKING and others who wasted their time on this, a deal that in the past would have worked. Staples has really gone down hill where deals in general are concerned, even some of their sale prices are laughable. Hardly have good breakroom deals any longer too. Office Depot is by far the better store these days for deals and rewards.

I wholeheartedly agree and have felt that way for some time now. Office Depot is far superior to Staples to deal hunters at least. The only time I shop at Staples now are for FAR opportunities where I can use up my remaining $318 in Staples gift cards, such as when they offer FAR downloadable (so no sales tax) software. I don’t want anymore paper. I hope they stay in business long enough for me to cash out my remaining gift cards. Starting next year I will lose my Premier status for the first time in many years, so that will limit the truly FAR cash out opportunities.

If only any of them were still open…

I guess each person will have their own opinion, but to me,
I find the exact opposite - Staples is way superior to Office Depot as far as deals and rewards. It was Staples who had a 27" monitor last week for $130 and on Black Friday for $99 - I can’t recall OD ever having a 27" monitor at that price in the last year. It was Staples who had the TI-84 plus graphing calculator at $90 for 5 weeks last summer - OD never had it lower than $120. It was Staples that had the Norton Antivirus for 1 cent after rebate - when was the last time OD had an antivirus for that price? Staples has the $25 off $100 Visa Checkout deals every once in a while - when was the last time OD had that? And Staples gift cards can routinely be bought at PPDG with a 10% bonus. Very rarely do I find anything at OD at a decent price. And that doesn’t even talk about the majority of people here cant even find a local OD store anymore because most of them closed down. I don’t think there are any of them left in the whole NYC and in the whole state of New York there are 4 of them compared to 106 Staples stores; in New Jersey there are 4 OD stores compared to 70 Staples stores. As I said, maybe you happen to live near one of the few remaining OD’s, but for the majority of people they are few and far between.

  • 500 Club

@bbsearchlight I agree although there has never been an OD nor an OM in my state so I don’t have anything to compare to, what I’ve read it doesn’t sound like the cash out options for Rewards are any better. Buying postage stamps is just cashing out, its not MM.

Yes, Staples freebies and great MM deals have dwindled. They have at all B&M retailers.

  • 500 Club

I’m not doing the B2G1 deal myself, but I have not seen any report of rebate issues on SD, as long as the NI-SKU is correctly scanned 3 times. The rebate amount of $117 is shown for 3 cases.
