My payment for water/garbage/sewer/fire department to the Village did not code as “Utilities”. Instead it coded as “Misc Government Services.” Not amused.

because 'The Village" is a government entity. It is not a utility company like Duke Electric or Con Edison. Utilities are typically private or publicly held companies as opposed to a government operated or middleman service where they contract for garbage pick up (or run the garbage pick up or water operation where you live). Come on Zeus, you should know this.

It can be hit or miss with these bonus categories crediting as hoped/expected. I also gave it a try to see what would happen paying my water bill which is through my town’s third-party govt portal. The actual bill did indeed report as “utilities”. But they also charge a fee for using a credit card, which billed as a separate transaction, and that showed as “misc govt services”. In the end, the 5% bonus on the bill was pretty much a wash to cover the fee. It was a confirmation that the category applied, at least. I’ll get the full 5% back on my electric, gas, and Internet bills since no CC fees are charged on those.

@yoregano I pay my electric bill with no fee prepaid Visa gc (Staples, Chase Ink). We get one free cc transaction per month.
You can buy gas (or any other) gc at a gas station and get 5% back from Discover as its a gas station purchase.
Chase Ink gives 5% back on phone & Internet year round so I have those on autopay.

It’s just my water that comes from my local municipality that charges a fee for online transactions.
Buying GCs from a gas station, yeah, that’s a way to ensure maxing out the 5% promo bonus, though I try to be careful getting too deep in stocked up GCs and generally prefer to buy GCs other ways that have bigger discounts.
I don’t have a Chase card, but yeah, I know that cards like this can be good for certain types of purchases like you mentioned.

@yoregano I keep a few hundred in prepaid VC/MC on hand to pay for everything possible. I basically use Chase Ink for prepaids and Discover’s 5% categories. You can’t use prepaids online to buy 3rd party gc but they work on 3rd party cards B&M. There’s very little that I buy without at least 5% back.
