Thanks for setting up this site.
One of the things that made FW special was the 1st page of the Forums that gave some of the “hot” topics (max of 5) in each category. Can we bring that here?

We are planning to help @dangeRuss implement a lot of improvements in the days ahead, and will definitely see if we can make this happen. We’re all aware things aren’t perfect yet - but Russ did an amazing job of making this happen literally overnight. As long as we have the good people here, we’ll all be working together to improve the site over time. Glad you’re here and thanks!

You might want to enable Captcha (if available) during the registration process and/or email verification, otherwise you will get inundated with registrations/spam from bots.

Another thank you for setting this up. We don’t know how long FW has left so I’m willing to put up with a lot of growing pains.
Anyone pulled the stickies down for historical purposes? Once they close up shop over there I don’t see why we can’t keep them here/somewhere else.

But they aren’t shutting Ebates down, and that is what I was referring to. People will invariably post deals here which benefit Ebates when people go to click thru for cash back, especially if Ebates is running a CB promotion which is specifically mentioned.

I’m more inclined to boycott ratuken.com (won’t post deals for them) than Ebates if ebates is putting $$ in my pocket above any other CB site. all things being equal, I’ll use a different one.

And the fact that getting rebates from buycom/Ratuken is extremely low yield.

Well I must be a hardliner, I refuse to do cashback anywhere but Fatwallet, when it ended cashback I quit using cashback at all out of protest. Banning ebates IS same as banning rakuten, where do you think that money goes? I can’t bring myself to profit them.

I banned Rakuten the moment they bought FW… never posted any deals from them nor bought anything from them again. It was the most ridiculous thing I’d ever heard of for a retailer to own an independent deal site. Pfft.

That’s your right. Unless it is a board posting policy here that we can’t mention Ebates in our posts, I will do so when there’s a special CB promotion that makes a deal hotter. But people such as yourself can choose to avoid it.

Good point. I’ve highlighted this as something we need to address ASAP. Thank you.
To avoid any barriers to registrations right now, we’re going to hold off on email verifications and Captchas for the time being. We will definitely enable email verification once things have settled down (or sooner if spam/bots become an issue), followed by Captchas if that becomes necessary.

Hey y’all, I have a favor to ask. @dangeRuss has done an incredible job of making this happen, and I am very thankful that the FW announcement came out on a weekend allowing several of us to devote time to this effort. Several folks have volunteered to help moderate, build out the site, test, and do the things that need to be done.
That said, we’re all really overtasked with the initial success - we are trying to keep up and build things out/address bugs/respond to suggestions as quickly as possible. Where we need your help is with self-policing the site. If you see stupid or inappropriate things happening, please flag them and/or alert us. We’re not about having a community of rules, but we’re also not going to allow spam and blatant self-promotion. If something doesn’t pass a “sniff test” for quality, we’d appreciate your help in letting us know.

Anandtech! Now there’s a blast from the past.
I still remember the first FW admins coming into Anandtech HD, bearing deals and saying, “Hi, we have a new forum, come on over and say hello!”

It looks like this site is gaining more traction than https://www.reddit.com/r/FWFinance. Nice to have a better ability to keep our FW names too. Thanks for setting this site up! So nice to see the gang migrating together. Lets keep FW alive!
Another thought too, after FW does get shut down, I wonder if they would sell the domain so we can redirect it to here. Just for those infrequent members that may not log in time to see where we’ve re-established.

Just like they sold the buy.com domain. My guess is it will get redirected to ebates or rakuten.

I was wondering that we should put a little note on the signup page for members to preferably keep their FW username.
It will make it much easier for everyone knowing who’s who from FW.

What everyone else think?Most FWers appear to be keeping their FW user names (and avatars in many cases). I’m sure that most new people will notice that is so once they start browsing and participating, and then edit their name if they so choose. I see no harm in putting a note on the sign up page to let folks know it’s an option. I personally prefer that everyone keep their FW name and was grateful that I was allowed to do so, but it should be presented as an option instead of a preference at sign up, if at all.
