Amazon doesn’t price match on a person by person basis, but ever since Walmart has stepped up their online game to compete directly with Amazon, Amazon does “automatically” lower their selling prices to “match” whatever sale prices Walmart has on the hottest items. As soon as Walmart’s prices goes back up, so does Amazon’s… I think that’s what @my4mainecoons was mentioning.

Subway Credit Card Receipt Class Action Settlement

Consumers who used a credit or debit card to buy food or other items from the fast food chain Subway may qualify for a $30.9 million class action settlement.

Lead plaintiffs alleged in a class action lawsuit that Subway violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) by printing the expiration date on their and other customers credit and debit cards on receipts from the fast food chain.

Under FACTA, merchants who accept credit and debit cards must limit the information provided on receipts. The law specifically prohibits printing the expiration date or any more than the last five digits of the card number on a receipt. The Subway class action lawsuit alleged that credit card expiration dates were included on receipts at certain locations of the restaurant.

According to the Subway class action settlement, not all restaurant locations were affected, only those with a Subway Payment Manager system programmed to print credit or debit card expiration dates. Class Members include those who purchased items from those restaurants between Jan. 1, 2016 and March 23, 2017.

Under the terms of the Subway class action settlement, the restaurant and an associated company, Doctor’s Associates Inc., will pay $30.9 million — reportedly the largest settlement over allegations of FACTA violations.

Class Members have until Jan. 22, 2019 to either submit a claim, object to, or exclude themselves from the Subway class action settlement. The final approval hearing will be held March 8, 2019.

Who’s Eligible
Class Members include consumers who, between Jan. 1, 2016 and March 23, 2017, used a credit or debit card in a purchase made at a Subway location that was using the Subway Payment Manager programmed to print the card’s expiration date.

Potential Award
Up to $75.

Searching is often not a “one and done,” but a process of elimination, so that could be the issue. Make sure you’re being credited correctly before paying. You’re supposed to get 10% EVERYTHING before any coupons are applied (and it stacks with all digital coupons on your store card). On my order, the discount on a $2 item was missed when I clicked done/checkout. Yeah, I’m sooo tired of Amazon’s Prime 2-day shipping now effectively being 5-day shipping + a bunch of excuses and frequent membership fee hikes… next day beats my expectations though/is really impressive for free shipping… and Kroger already beat Amazon by using any packing materials, much less packing their boxes well.

Very true. Most of the prices I’ve noticed are the same, but you have to know what your local Kroger sells it for and/or what a competitive price is for a given product (no matter where you buy it). For example, my favorite premium rice brand is 3% less on Kroger Ship compared to their B&M, yet my favorite staple rice brand costs 6% more on K-Ship (fortunately it does go on sale there periodically, making it cheaper than the B&M).

I suspect that different Kroger coupons are in play here too, just not sure.

Confirmed! I believe that the digital B&M coupons you can load to your loyalty card are just Coupon .com coupons (that’s why, although affiliated with Kroger, you can’t submit Kroger receipts in the Coupons .com app). There are far fewer coupons on K-Ship and they are very different… I haven’t figured out how or why yet.

I do know that if decided to get the Hodgson Mills Oat Bran cereal from Amazon, it would have cost me almost as much… It pays to look around!

Yes, definitely shop around for everything… always… even after you found a great price somewhere because the next time they might raise the price (I’m looking at you Amazon), another retailer may have lowered their price/have a sale/have a coupon etc., or a new seller on the block could start selling it at a great price. FWIW, I never use Amazon S&S unless I have 5 items/qualify for 15% off (even if I have to place 2 separate orders of a staple product instead of one order of 2).

ETA: they had a $10 off + free shipping code for anyone (not just 1st timers) during the holidays, so definitely keep an out for future K-Ship deals you’ll qualify for.

In attempts to control the high costs of retail space and the declines in B&M traffic, Kohl’s has already been partnering with grocer Aldi for a while and, in the past year, has been working with Amazon to strengthen their e-commerce (relatedly, Amazon also just announced having to close 100 of their own retail pop-up stores… not their self-service stores).

Kohl’s smaller stores have been far more profitable, so Kohl’s will continue to reduce their retail footprint at 10 locations by selling or leasing space to (but not sharing front doors with) Planet Fitness gyms. They’ll cross-promote each other’s services and hope to benefit from each other’s foot traffic. Kohl’s may expand this partnership to more locations if things go well… and Kohl’s stock has increased nearly 8% since the announcement. Other retailers, like Target are opting to open smaller stores, especially in urban markets, instead of space sharing.

This week Charlotte Russe announced closing all 500 stores (not the recently announced closings of only some locations), and Diesel announced filing for bankruptcy in an attempt to salvage itself. All this on the heels of recent announcements of Payless Shoes stores going out of business, JCPenney closing even more stores, Family Dollar closing 400 stores (200 will be converting to Dollar Tree stores), Gap closing stores, the Sears fiasco etc. Yikes!

Seems to me that greedy landlords and developers also share a large part of the blame in the collapse of physical retail stores as exorbitant rents keep going up and up despite declines in already thin retail margins. For example, the last handmade fortune cookie company in the US may be forced to go out of business because their San Francisco rent went from $1,400 to $5,750 a month.

Is sharing retail space the way to salvage this mess? It seems to be buying time for some for Long John Silvers (that roommate with KFC). Will landlords allow it for those that don’t own their own properties (e.g., inside malls)… Can B&M chain stores save themselves, or is the writing already on the wall? Will laws be passed to curtail predatory price gouging landlords, robber barons purposefully bankrupting their own companies for self-enrichment, unfair tax exemptions and low salaries for mega-retailers, etc. Will the market just self-correct (landlords forced to lower rents or lose most/all tenants, soaring shipping rates drive traffic back to local stores, increased minimum wages increases online and local spending, ec.). So many factors at play… What’s the likely end game here?

I love online shopping, but if most retail locations eventually close and we’re forced to rely primarily on digital/online sales (from a much smaller selection of mega-retailers no doubt) and deliveries in order to just live and provide for ourselves, the social, financial, privacy, legal, economical, etc. consequences could be unprecedented, profound, and devastating. We seem to be hurtling towards a digital economy in every respect… or maybe I’m just reading too much into all of this.
