DoubleTree Signature Cookie Recipe
Makes 26 cookies

• ½ pound butter, softened (2 sticks)

• ¾ cup + 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

• ¾ cup packed light brown sugar

• 2 large eggs

• 1 ¼ teaspoons vanilla extract

• ¼ teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

• 2 ¼ cups flour

• 1/2 cup rolled oats

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 1 teaspoon salt

• Pinch cinnamon

• 2 2/3 cups Nestle Tollhouse semi-sweet chocolate chips

• 1 3/4 cups chopped walnuts

Cream butter, sugar and brown sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes.

Add eggs, vanilla and lemon juice, blending with mixer on low speed for 30 seconds, then medium speed for about 2 minutes, or until light and fluffy, scraping down bowl.

With mixer on low speed, add flour, oats, baking soda, salt and cinnamon, blending for about 45 seconds. Don’t overmix.

Remove bowl from mixer and stir in chocolate chips and walnuts.

Portion dough with a scoop (about 3 tablespoons) onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper about 2 inches apart.

Preheat oven to 300°F. Bake for 20 to 23 minutes, or until edges are golden brown and center is still soft.

Remove from oven and cool on baking sheet for about 1 hour.

Cook’s note: You can freeze the unbaked cookies, and there’s no need to thaw. Preheat oven to 300°F and place frozen cookies on parchment paper-lined baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake until edges are golden brown and center is still soft.

It seems that CCleaner, one of PCWorld’s recommendations for the best free software for new PCs, might not have been keeping your PC so clean after all. In an in-depth probe of the popular optimization and scrubbing software, Cisco Talos has discovered a malicious bit of code injected by hackers that could have affected more than 2 million users who downloaded the most recent update.

[Editor’s note: This article was first published on September 18, 2017, but was updated on Sept. 21 with details about the malware targeting specific technology companies for industrial espionage.]

On Sept. 13, Cisco Talos found that the official download of the free versions of CCleaner 5.33 and CCleaner Cloud 1.07.3191 also contained “a malicious payload that featured a Domain Generation Algorithm as well as hardcoded Command and Control functionality.” What that means is that a hacker infiltrated Avast Piriform’s official build somewhere in the development process build to plant malware designed to steal users’ data.

Cisco Talos suspects that the attacker “compromised a portion of (CCleaner’s) development or build environment and leveraged that access to insert malware into the CCleaner build that was released and hosted by the organization.” As such, customers’ personal information was not at risk.

In a blog post by vice president of products Paul Yung, he states that the company identified the attack on Sept. 12 and had taken the appropriate action even before Cisco Talos notified them of their discovery. Yung says the attack was limited to CCleaner and CCleaner Cloud on 32-bit Windows systems—fortunately, most modern PCs will likely be running the 64-bit version.

Yung assures customers that the threat has been resolved and the “rogue server” has been taken down. He also says Piriform has shut down the hackers’ access to other servers. Additionally, the company is moving all users to the latest version of the software, which is already available on the company’s website (though the release notes only mention “minor big fixes.”)

Most reassuringly, Yung states that Avast was seemingly able to disarm the threat before it was able to do any harm. The intent of the attack is unclear at this time, though Avast says the code was able to collect information about the local system.

Update: On September 21, Avast revealed that the malware was designed to deliver a second-stage payload to infected computers in specific organizations, and at least 20 machines across eight companies contacted the command and control server. “Given that the logs were only collected for little over three days, the actual number of computers that received the 2nd stage payload was likely at least in the order of hundreds,” Avast says.

Cisco Talos also studied the malware’s command server and reports that it was attempting to infiltrate PCs in technology organizations, including Intel, Samsung, HTC, VMWare, Cisco itself, and others. You can see the full list at right. Cisco Talos suspects the attackers planned to use the malware to conduct industrial espionage.

What to do about CCleaner malware

Personal users can download CCleaner 5.34 from Avast’s website if they haven’t already done so. Previous releases are also still available on the company’s website, but the infected version has been removed from the company’s servers. You’ll also want to perform an antivirus scan on your computer. If you’re affected, Cisco Talos recommends using a backup to restore your PC to a state prior to August 15, 2017, which is when the hacked version was released.

The impact on you at home: While personal users within the target area shouldn’t see any impact from this attempted attack, it’s still a scary notion. While Avast got in front of the issue and resolved it without incident, smaller companies might not be able to react so quickly. For example, earlier this year, it was found that a breach at Ukranian software company MeDoc was responsible for the NotPetya ransomware. Ransomware is becoming a troubling trend, and if hackers are able to infect infect update servers they can spread malware to as many machines as possible.

  • Swagbucks app: allows you to do searches, enter swag codes, watch videos, and do discover activities. When you try to enter a swag code online and you get an error message saying that it is an in app code, this is the app they’re talking about. Another reason to install it is that every time a new swag code is released, this app will notify you and tell you where to find it.

• Daily codes: each day they announce a swag code that you enter by clicking on the dial at the top of each screen (or in the Swagbucks app or the Swagbucks browser extension if indicated). Codes are usually announced in the late morning to late afternoon and can be redeemed for about 1 hour (longer on weekends and holidays). Codes are announced on their Facebook page and through the Swagbucks app. There are also sites which will send you text notifications if you register. Watch out for “extravaganza” code days where they might issue 6 or 7 codes in one day instead of 1 daily code worth 2 or 3 SB… and they be worth 6 - 9SB each or more.

• Daily To Do List (updated 04-21-2019): you can earn a variable number of bonus bucks (usually 6-10 SBs) each day by completing the 8-item to do list on your homepage. You complete a number of these just by using the site anyway, so you may as well complete the list to get the bonus points. The list includes the daily poll (1 SB), daily search (SB varies), deal of the day (0 SB), daily activity (0 SB), daily discover (SB varies), daily watch (SB varies), attempt daily gold survey (1 SB per disqualification, 5 max daily for most people), and complete a gold survey (SB varies). The daily crave/ncrave (usually 1 SB each, max 48 SB daily) is no longer part of the list but can still be accessed via the “Learn More” link under the To Do List title.

• Daily Searches: this is not as lucrative as it used to so I barely bother with it anymore. You used to be able o win a search 4 or more times a day and occasionally you’d get a very high value search reward Like 50 - 100 SB). Now its hard to get one win every few days and the value is rarely over 10 SB.

• TLTG: The Laptop Guy: When available, watch a variable number of videos to earn 2SB. It’s best when there is a long run of 1 video/1 click = 2 SBs. He can be accessed under popular videos on the home page or sponsored videos on the watch page, or just keep his popup window open and refresh whenever you want to check to see if he’s available. • 5 DQ points in Gold Surveys Daily: if you do surveys, do them before Peanut Labs surveys because PL DQs count towards your daily gold survey DQ, byt no the other way around. Plus there are no limits to how many PL DQs you can get per day which can really help you reach your daily goal or bonus goal if you’re very close and running out of time.

• nCrave: nCraves are groups of videos that earn varying amounts of points. It is a sub-heading under the “Watch” home page or you can click here: http://www.swagbucks.com/ncrave. The video sets that auto run are great when you are multitasking because you don’t have to click the next button after each video. Also make sure that you look at how much each video set is worth as the value changes periodically, even when the picture and title stay the same (what may have been paying 9 SB earlier may now only pay 3 SB), and nCraves you avoid for paying too little may suddenly be worth much more. nCraves satisfy the daily crave item on your daily to do list.

• Team Challenges occur every 1 to 2 months beginning on a Monday at 1pm EST and end at 3pm EST on the Friday of that same week. You have to sign up for the promo and earn a specified number of team points (not the same as SBs but calculated on the SBs you’re earning anyway). You can sign up at any time during the challenge. If your team wins, you get a variable number of SBs for redeeming your bucks for a GC purchase (called a Swag Up). The winners often get 50 SBs and 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams get lower value Swag Ups. Since you are earning SBs anyway, you may as ell sign up to team challenges and get a free bonus.

• Coupon Printing: for the past month or so, there has been a coupon printing promo that awards 1 SB per coupon printed up to the daily limited. It started at 30 coupons a day, went up to 40, and is now at 50 100 coupons per day. You can print the coupons to a pdf file to save paper and ink, then only print the pages with coupons you actually want to use )(you also get 10 SB per redeemed coupon). If you take a couple of minutes a day to print 50 coupons, that’s an extra $15 SB a month.

• A note on taking surveys: yes, they’re annoying and you get disqualified a lot, but if you do Gold surveys until you get 5 DQs, you earn 1 SB per DQ and then 1 SB for each Peanut Lab survey DQ. This can help you meet your daily bonus requirements in a pinch if you’re close but running out of time. More importantly, surveys are also a gateway to much more lucrative product testing (which often pay $10 to $50 and do not require writing reviews) and invitations to join short or long term discussion boards that vary in compensation. One 2-week discussion board I did paid $300 and I’ve done several that have paid $50 to $150. The long-term discussion boards that pay $10 - $25 a month a great as long as the effort is commensurate with the compensation, but I avoid discussion boards that give you the chance to win in favor of guaranteed monthly payments.

So, you want to also be able to sort by the date a thread was created, in the order they were posted (newest to oldest and vice versa)? I’d like to see that too. I hope that that is something easy for @dangeRuss to enable.

Personally, I think it would be more important to focus on continuing popular threads from FW that are still active here.

Also, I’m not sure about mimicking another active site verbatim vs. focus on building membership and our own identity. Apple finally acknowledges and apologizes for software updates that slowed older phones to a crawl, claiming it was to increase the life of older batteries/conserve power to prevent random shutdowns. They deny doing it to force users to upgrade to/buy newer phones as claimed by a growing number of class action lawsuits across the country.

To compensate, they’re charging just $29 for brand new internal battery replacements on the iPhone 6 and models released aftwards, which should restore phone operation speeds to like new condition. They normally charge $79 for out-of-warranty battery replacements. iPhone 6 users can also purchase an iPhone Smart Battery Case for $99.

A Message to Our Customers about iPhone Batteries and Performance

We’ve been hearing feedback from our customers about the way we handle performance for iPhones with older batteries and how we have communicated that process. We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologize. There’s been a lot of misunderstanding about this issue, so we would like to clarify and let you know about some changes we’re making.

First and foremost, we have never — and would never — do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades. Our goal has always been to create products that our customers love, and making iPhones last as long as possible is an important part of that.

How batteries age

All rechargeable batteries are consumable components that become less effective as they chemically age and their ability to hold a charge diminishes. Time and the number of times a battery has been charged are not the only factors in this chemical aging process.

Device use also affects the performance of a battery over its lifespan. For example, leaving or charging a battery in a hot environment can cause a battery to age faster. These are characteristics of battery chemistry, common to lithium-ion batteries across the industry.

A chemically aged battery also becomes less capable of delivering peak energy loads, especially in a low state of charge, which may result in a device unexpectedly shutting itself down in some situations.

To help customers learn more about iPhone’s rechargeable battery and the factors affecting its performance, we’ve posted a new support article, iPhone Battery and Performance.

It should go without saying that we think sudden, unexpected shutdowns are unacceptable. We don’t want any of our users to lose a call, miss taking a picture or have any other part of their iPhone experience interrupted if we can avoid it.

Preventing unexpected shutdowns

About a year ago in iOS 10.2.1, we delivered a software update that improves power management during peak workloads to avoid unexpected shutdowns on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE. With the update, iOS dynamically manages the maximum performance of some system components when needed to prevent a shutdown. While these changes may go unnoticed, in some cases users may experience longer launch times for apps and other reductions in performance.

Customer response to iOS 10.2.1 was positive, as it successfully reduced the occurrence of unexpected shutdowns. We recently extended the same support for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in iOS 11.2.

Of course, when a chemically aged battery is replaced with a new one, iPhone performance returns to normal when operated in standard conditions.

Recent user feedback

Over the course of this fall, we began to receive feedback from some users who were seeing slower performance in certain situations. Based on our experience, we initially thought this was due to a combination of two factors: a normal, temporary performance impact when upgrading the operating system as iPhone installs new software and updates apps, and minor bugs in the initial release which have since been fixed.

We now believe that another contributor to these user experiences is the continued chemical aging of the batteries in older iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s devices, many of which are still running on their original batteries.

Addressing customer concerns

We’ve always wanted our customers to be able to use their iPhones as long as possible. We’re proud that Apple products are known for their durability, and for holding their value longer than our competitors’ devices.

To address our customers’ concerns, to recognize their loyalty and to regain the trust of anyone who may have doubted Apple’s intentions, we’ve decided to take the following steps:

• Apple is reducing the price of an out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacement by $50 — from $79 to $29 — for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced, available worldwide through December 2018. Details will be provided soon on apple.com.

• Early in 2018, we will issue an iOS software update with new features that give users more visibility into the health of their iPhone’s battery, so they can see for themselves if its condition is affecting performance.

• As always, our team is working on ways to make the user experience even better, including improving how we manage performance and avoid unexpected shutdowns as batteries age.

At Apple, our customers’ trust means everything to us. We will never stop working to earn and maintain it. We are able to do the work we love only because of your faith and support — and we will never forget that or take it for granted.

FBI Says You Should Reboot Your Home Office Router to Stop Russian Malware

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation recommended in a Friday statement that “any owner of small office and home office routers” reboot the devices, hopefully reducing their exposure to a widespread malware attack linked to Russian government actors. The FBI has reportedly seized a server used to escalate the infection, making rebooting an effective way to disable it.

A Cisco cybersecurity team said on Wednesday that at least 500,000 routers in 54 countries were impacted by the malware, known as VPN Filter. The software reportedly targets consumer-level routers used in home and small offices, and is able to both monitor local traffic and even wipe the routers, destroying them and cutting users off from the internet. Routers from Linksys, Netgear, TP-Link, and MikroTik were reportedly vulnerable – though again, the FBI is recommending rebooting all small or home office routers.
