One family pocketed $7.6 million by taking cans and bottles from Arizona and recycling them in California. That's fraud, prosecutors say.

Hmm, why does this remind me of a “Seinfeld” episode?

Hope the perps get excellent counsel to negotiate a plea.

I won’t bother to do the math but at 5¢ a can that’s a lot of cans.

Multiply by 20 so 156 million, which seems really logistically challenging. They aren’t super heavy - though that would be a couple tons. But they take up a lot of space. I guess less o if they are crushed like the picture shows.

You know what they say, pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered. I bet there are thousands of companies doing this on a smaller scale.

ISO a state that has big recycling refunds and cheap cigs to shlep back to my high tax state.
-
@sonofzeus Indian Reservations used to have cheap cigs. IDK if that’s still true. I buy beverages in NH (no state sales tax, no CRV) and return the empties in my state for the nickels for <$10 year MM. Cigs are cheaper in states without sales tax but reservations didn’t charge federal tax either. I’ve been in a couple of tribe owned casinos and don’t recall cigarette stores so things may have changed.

I live in CA and recycle and there is a limit of 100 lbs of recyclables at any one time per consumer, so for a family to have made $7.6 million, that took many trips and many people recycling all the time.

@mrvietnam How do they track it? Could one go to different recycling centers in the same day?

Not sure, but on big redemptions, you have to show your ID.
