McDonald’s is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac with “Mac Money.” Starting Thursday, you get one of 5 limited edition collectible “Mac Coins” with the purchase of a Big Mac at participating location. Starting Friday, you can redeem each coin for a free Big Mac at any McDonald’s around the world at participating locations. While supplies last.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac, McDonald’s unveiled the MacCoin, a limited edition global currency* backed by the internationally iconic Big Mac that fans across the world can get their hands on starting August 2 to share, collect or redeem. Beginning at lunch time on August 2, customers can receive a MacCoin with the purchase of a Big Mac at 14,000 participating restaurants across the U.S., while supplies last. Starting on August 3 through 2018, customers can redeem their MacCoin for a free Big Mac at participating McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. and in more than 50 participating countries.
More than 6.2 million MacCoins will be distributed globally in more than 50 countries while supplies last. These commemorative coins feature five unique designs, each representing a decade of the Big Mac. Each MacCoin design pulls in elements from that time in history, nodding to art, music and pop culture, while the front-side of the MacCoin celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac…

- The ‘80s alluding to pop art
- The ‘90s defined with bold, abstract shapes

I wondered if the coins would stack with the app promos. I don’t use the app, so hopefully anyone who tries to stack them can report back their results. That would take the sting out of the app going from allowing a $1 sandwich per day to only once a week (if I understand correctly).

This should work. Since the cashier will be handing out the coins with purchase, there shouldn’t be and issues with how much one paid for the purchase (getting a discount via the app). Perhaps a YMMV situation based on each particular location and/or manager or cashier on duty at the time.
Also, FWIW, how frequently one can use the $1 app deal varies based on location. I am still able to use it once per day in the Chicago area.

Thank you, I was not aware that redemption terms varied by location… I thought it was corporate wide and somehow enforced through the app.

@briarycliffs Hmm, I wonder if that once-a-week coupon limit is regional, or otherwise triggered from successive daily usage? I still see/use it several times a week for the last two weeks, no problem. About the coin promo, I’d still rather have one $1 “artisan” chicken sandwich than two $0.50 Big Macs…

Hmmm. It would seem some locations are not honoring the terms stated in the official press release which clearly states that coins will be given out while supplies last (not just on August 2nd).

Others can correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the managers have the coins and you have to ask for one when you pick up your order.

They just started a promo–2 Big Macs for $5, so I’m not sure they would still be giving out the coins while that deal is active.

@v999 I didn’t do a mobile order, which is my norm, because I didn’t trust them to give me the coin. I went inside and ordered and scanned the app for the $1 coupon. The coin came after they checked my order and said she got a big mac. There were 2 others that complained they didn’t get the coin in the short amount of time I was standing there. I may actually keep the coin for a collectors item, don’t know yet. I was hoping for the full set, didn’t know you had to get all of them on one day. They even said it was one coin per order, didn’t matter how many big macs you ordered.
