Is it possible with this software to create subforums for specific retailers where a hot deal after a certain date would end up there as a YMMV. Thus you wouldn’t really worry about it being expired or not. I forecast a problem once the membership grows the first hot deal screen will scroll so much and end up looking like the bottom the http://www.city-data.com/forum/ screen.
-
@pruhtp we have an expired deals forum, where moderators (I assume) will move threads that need to be moved. Does that take care of the issue you’re talking about?
-
@jaytrader If you remove the word expired and replace it with YMMV and include a note that YMMV includes possible expired deals it may work. But you’d still have to create subforums for each retailer which would keep it cleaner. I just don’t want it to look like SAP with too many sub levels. I’d probably create the YMMV forum to keep the header, set up a wiki, keep the vote count and delete the commentary in order to safe space.
-
@pruhtp perhaps a YMMV forum then? You talk about keeping things clean, but I can’t agree that a subforum for each retailer would be clean. In fact, it would be the exact opposite. I think that’d be way too fragmented. Perhaps a big box retailer subforum, to encompass all of the big stores (HD, Lowes, Amazon, Target, etc.)? Just spit balling.
-
@jaytrader Well that can work, but based on past failure the YMMVs should go to HD for 7-10 days first. Combine similar stores maybe. So one would maybe be Staples, OM, OD. and one could be Walmart, Target
-
@pruhtp I still think that individual stores/groups of specific stores as forum names is not going to work. There will be way too many. We do have the option of using tags though, which may allow us to merge our ideas into one. Perhaps a forum or two as a deal status indicator, and then tags for certain stores?
-
@jaytrader for it to work comments needs to be shut off once it ends up there. It’s the loads of comments that turn it into a clusterfark.
-
@jaytrader Create a YMMV thread leader icon and let’s see where it goes. I have the Staples FW people on board ready to use it.
-
@pruhtp that’s unfortunately out of my control, as our dictator @dangeRuss has kept that control to himself

I don’t think subforums for every retailer makes sense, but we could use tags for that.
I’m not too clear on what you mean by YMMV thread leader icon, and how would we use it?
-
@dangeruss Under the heading of Deals, place a icon for YMMV deals as it’s not really a Hot Deal as it’s not everywhere and it doesn’t fit into deal discussions or expired deals. The major players from FW and SD will know exactly how and what to post in it

So like another subforum?
-
@dangeruss that’s my understanding.
-
@dangeruss Yes. If you go over to SD and look up my posts they were simple. Store, Description, Price, B&M, YMMV.
-
@dangeruss For now it will cover all B&Ms and later on if updates are needed then we update as needed. I do this everyday in Oracle.

Yes I understand that we should be putting that into the title, but I don’t think I’ve seen any forums (SD included) have a YMMV subforum.
If we do create one, what should be call it? Just “YMMV” and post it under deals?
-
@dangeruss YMMV deals.
-
@dangeruss Mistercheap knows how to moderate it or I can moderate it if need be.
-
@dangeruss So know the next question is why can’t you create pins just like in free stuff in YMMV?
Official Staples’s Clearance YMMV Master Thread

We can. You just need to ask a moderator to do it for you.
You can just flag your post and write a note asking us to pin it.
-
@dangeruss Jay is banned?? ok? So who’s the replacement mod? Well, Please create pin for Lowes in Ymmv. TIA
-

@PruHTP I just pinned it for you. Can this thread be marked “resolved?”
-
@fivetalents It’s a thread that will continue to be pinned as people start new threads for different retailers that needs to be pinned (I’m just babying it’s growth). I went through a long convo just to get it created as this is a basically a in store only clearance thread. So is it resolved that depends on your POV. My request is.

@PruHTP Not sure what the rest of your thought was, but my thinking is this:
-
Your help request was for a YMMV sub-forum to be created and that has been accomplished.
-
To request that a thread be pinned, you just have to open the thread and click the 3 little vertical black dots for the OP and select “Flag this post for moderation.” Then type your request (e.g., “please pin this thread”). This creates a moderator alert that the next mod who sees it will address.
Marking this request resolved does not lock the thread. You’re welcome to post another comment/reply anytime should a related issue or thought occur. However, you don’t need to keep coming back here to request that threads be pinned since you can do it directly from the thread.
What do you think?
-
-
That sounds ok
-
@PruHTP @dangeRuss @fivetalents
All, I must chime in and say that a YMMV sub forum is NOT a good idea. EVERY hot deal has varying degrees of YMMV, whether that be stock at the B&M, targeted offers like Amex Offers, Groupons, Plenti, sub-sets, certain charge card needed, regional deals are often not known when posted (IE, pizza codes at Papa John’s etc.).
My own personal experience is, Sub Forums, lumping YMMV’s in one place are wastelands. No one is going to want to ‘hunt’ for deals that should be part of the HD scan, even if that includes a YMMV deal.
As for the Staples Clearance thread (YMMV) that Pru had on FW, that was never part of a sub forum and there’s no reason that ‘rolling thunder’ thread can’t just be an ongoing HD thread with no need to look for it in a sub forum.
You can only splinter forums so many times before it sort of defeats the purpose. if something isn’t a ‘deal’ it goes in Deal Discussion, but a deal is a deal is a deal, even if YMMV and should go in HD and not in a subforum of HD.
Even on FW, the Black Friday threads in BF subforum was mirrored to HD and that’s a special one time per year situation, but I see no reason to mirror an Amex Offers post (which is clearly YMMV since not all cards get the same offers) to both YMMV and HD and deals like that clearly belong in HD as do all YMMV deals IMO.
-
@mistercheap I think I agree with you, but will wait for others to chime in before taking any action.
-
I oppose a YMMV breakout, but not militantly so. Nevertheless, given a vote I’m with MC.
-
I agree. A “YMMV” sub-forum doesn’t make sense. Posting as much concise detail as reasonable in any HD topic, including particular YMMV factors, is the best route.
Sub-forums should more about genres, such as grocery, automotive, etc., not about variables in the shopping experience.
-
I agree with MrC completely. What I’d prefer to see, rather than a YMMV sub-forum, is a master thread pinned in the hot deals sub-forum that lists the links for all of the official retailer YMMV threads (Staples, Kohls, Target, Lowes etc.). Then all of these retailer threads any other one-off YMMV deals just get posted in hot deals like the other deals where they’ll get maximum exposure.
ETA: @FrugalFreak posted on a similar concern here about how to handle the “Official” threads: https://phatwalletforums.com/topic/829/sub-category. IMHO, all “Official” and YMMV threads could be listed in the same pinned master list in hot deals.
-
@fivetalents Personally, we should stay away from master YMMV threads for a bunch of retailers, remember, each deal generates it’s own discussions, varying expirations or variables that can change (dead, back in stock, coupon codes for certain users, etc). You wind up with a thread with a glut of expired deals no one can keep track of and will create a bunch of moderator alerts that can’t really be acted on properly since if you have to move every post in connection with a given product to expired, if that can even be done.
I’ve always held the view the master forums, even for YMMV simply have too many deals that get missed by people and the chance for people to see them, buried in the 10th post in that thread is a sure way for it to get little or no attention.
Please, let’s stay away from master YMMV threads for actual DEALS for a host of retailers. The only master threads that worked on FW were the Staples Clearance thread, the Kohls Coupons thread and the like.
-
PS the master Red Box thread was in Free Stuff

That’s what I’m talking about, but to help people find/quickly access them, pin a thread that has all of the links to them (there would be nothing else in that pinned thread and it could be locked).

right. it’s basically like a table of contents that you click on to go to official thread you want. It helps keeps them visible rather than buried in pages upon pages of deals(can’t tell if any are actually hot yet).
-
If one looks at the YMMV thread on SD, I was adamantly against it’s creation. But SD wanted it since it worked well in FW and SD had me create it. Most people on SD hated it and there was more discussion than actual posting. When I walked away from it, it pretty much had a quick death. The one on FW wasn’t created by me, but people see me as one of the poster children for YMMV. Thus per their requests I went through the steps to create a B&M YMMV clearance thread on PW. Personally I prefer for all YMMV clearance deals to go in HD. For former FW people it was a friendly lounge, for SD it is not. Thus my 3 cents is to give it 6 months and see what happens.
-
Agree with Mr. C

There are now three clearance subforums. One is called Clearance and two are called YMMV. Having three will confuse everyone. IMHO get rid of the YMMV forums completely.

the one in hot deals pinned, just links to the other

My 2¢…
I was a frequent post-er to the FW Staples Clearance thread and it wasn’t always easy to find.
Search for STAPLES and a lot of threads appeared, the Clearance thread not necessarily being on the first page.
Sometimes the easiest way to find it was to start on Page 1 of HD and scroll down looking for long green bars.
So I like the YMMV forum and store specific threads.
On FW something YMMV and “hot” was posted on HD and mentioned in the Staples Clearance Thread.

@frugalfreak I’m confused. Why are there 2 Staples Clearance Thread icons with different OP’s?
The Staples Clearance Thread regulars were a small group. Within the FW thread we had a discussion as to what to do after FW closed. PruHTP said he would work on setting up thread on PW. It happened. He said it would be called YMMV and so you’ll see that me and another of the FW Staples Clearance regulars have posted to the YMMV thread. Not sure what marcopolomie’s thread is about. Never saw him on the FW Clearance thread.

@frugalfreak I didn’t need help finding thread once I saw YMMV subforum and based on discussion we’d had on FW, knew that’s where thread would be. Never saw directory before…
