If I’m reading the T&C correctly: This is above and beyond the regular monthly recycle (says Standard monthly Ink Recycling Rewards will be excluded from recycled cartridges earning $4 back)

So if you are PLUS, you recycle 20, you’ll earn $40 for standard monthly ink recycle and another $40 for this promo for a total of $80. Does anyone disagree with that take?

  • Global Moderator

I wish Office Depot would have a double ink recycling event. There last one was almost a year-and-a-half ago (November 2019),

  • 500 Club

With the regular $30 ink purchase requirement every 7 months, and the cost of the empty cartridges, the reward to cost ratio is about 4.5:1. Not sure if this promo is worth the cost or not, if you’re not due for the $30 ink purchase requirement.

I don’t think so, imho. It is so poorly worded. I think it’s $4 on the regular rewards check i f you do buy ink or if you don’t buy ink, you get the regular $2 ink recycling reward check.

@briarycliffs isn’t that what I said? read my post again, said you get $80 total (regular and ink promo) combined if you turn in 20 carts when you buy the ink this coming week.

I think Two separate cks will be issued in May, one for the reg. ink recycle, one for this special promo.

  • @mistercheap

It’s poorly worded, but I don’t think you will get both. Inclusion of the word “or” from the T&C is troubling:

"Get $2 back in Staples® rewards on each ink and toner cartridge recycled or $4 back in Staples rewards on each ink or toner cartridge recycled when purchasing ink or toner in the same transaction when recycling. "

    As is this sentence:
“Standard limit of 10 cartridges per calendar month per customer still applies regardless of amount earned per recycled cartridge.”

You are relying on the sentence in between for your interpretation, but it is unclear what Staples is trying to say here. It’s only 10 ink cartridges, so it is certainly worth taking a chance, but I won’t have my hopes up.

First off: yes the wording is very confusing, but I still maintain you will get both.

This line applies to base rewards: Standard limit of 10 cartridges per calendar month per customer still applies regardless of amount earned per recycled cartridge. However, Premier and Plus members get 20 per month.

What that is saying is, when you bring in your carts (say 10 or 20) to recycle at the same time you buy ink on this promo, that’s IT! you can’t recycle another 10 or 20 for the month. But my point was, this line: Standard monthly Ink Recycling Rewards will be excluded from recycled cartridges earning $4 back
Such that if you recycle 10, you’ll get $40 total and if plus/premier you will get $80 since this promo is paying $4 vs $2, while not mentioned, those members monthly limit is 20.

So for a “regular” member, buy $30 ink, recycle ten. Earn $40 in Rewards and meet your $30 spend for the next 6 months? No minimum spend for the ink? If not, there will be the next time the offer comes around.

Correct. So you could earn rewards each month until October as long as you recycle early in October before the 6 months runs out (ie, buy ink on April 8, recycle by 10/7 in October) The $30 investment will net you at least:

$160 in rewards over the 6 months, possibly more if there’s another double recycle event not tied to buying ink.

@my4mainecoons “no minimum spend for the ink” comment appears that it is that way this go round, although I do wonder if there’s a misprint.

  • 500 Club

@mistercheap On my “regular” account I’d purchase on the 8th so I can recycle the first week of October. But more to the point, they’re essentially giving us free recycling for 6 mo. It might be time to get some other family members to recycle.

if you aren’t due for the $30 yet, you can spend $10 on ink and still get this, no minimum listed. Spend $10 get an xtra $40 in rewards.

  • Thank OP.

Since they “updated” the website, I can’t seem to find when I’m due to buy more ink. Can someone point me to the right spot?

When did you turn them in? Mine is showing, and oddly enough, showing I earned $80 for the March turn in?? Fine by me.

  • 500 Club

@mistercheap March 27. It often takes a week or more for site to update. I also bought 2 ink for 40% back in Rewards and that isn’t showing yet either. I don’t keep track of my “recycling date” because I buy ink almost every month. IDK what the date shown (Sept. 23, 2021) is based on. Since I purchased ink on March 27th I’d think my anniversary would be Sept. 27 but maybe its Sept. 23. Moot point since I’ll be buying ink again on April 10.

Maybe the $80 is from the month you had to call to have them credited.

They really seem screwed up. I also show $80 earned for March, but then again that happened a few months back, and I got the expected $40 anyway. I’m guessing that’s what will happen this time too.

And a thank you to my4mainecoons.

  • 500 Club

Mine also shows $80 for March ink rewards. Got my fingers crossed that’s what will be credited.

  • 500 Club

Last year I received $80/month for a few months. No reason for it. I don’t usually check my account until Rewards post so IDK what the account showed before I received the Rewards.
    I spent them ASAP, lol.

  • I think the most rewards for premier would be $60. $40 for the double on the maximum 10 and another $20 for the extra 10 cartridges that premier members can recycle.

I would say $60 is the minimum. Could be $80 based on past behavior.

Have to disagree, as the wording only takes into account ‘base rewards’ members. Standard monthly Ink Recycling Rewards will be excluded from recycled cartridges earning $4 back. Standard limit of 10 cartridges per calendar month per customer still applies regardless of amount earned per recycled cartridge

However the standard ‘limit’ for plus/premier is indeed 20 per month, and typically they give the corresponding double rewards on the 20 as well. Of course this is strictly my take, but I’m confident that is how it will play out.

  • I purchased a $23 ink and CSR let me use a 10 off 20. Recycled the 20 Cartridges. Thank you for posting, this is where I found the deal.

  • @mistercheap Ok, after reading the offer details I’m a tad puzzled by the sentence mentioning a “minimum spend requirement”.

Does this offer have some minimum spend level for buying ink/toner on the same transaction as when you recycle ink cartridges?

I’m asking because with 2 days left on this offer, I’m eyeing a $14 Brother ink cartridge in-stock at my store, plus I have a $5-off-$10 coupon code for in-store that Staples texted me. As a Plus member, I’ll be bringing in 20 used ink cartridges to recycle. I suspect I’ll have to insist it all happens on the same receipt.

I won’t use the coupon code 68192 for the 30% back-in-Rewards on ink (last day today, 4/09), because it says it may not be valid in combination with any other offer. Wouldn’t want to jinx the double ink rewards offer for that small amount…

I think the T&C wording is a template and the spend requirement is likely there for someone who tries to buy ink and pay with rewards (notice, it does say rewards redemptions) and then expect the bonus and/or that ink to count towards their ink requirement. There’s absolutely no mention of a $ minimum attached to this deal as far as buy $x in ink to earn double rewards. It simply says buy ink at the same time you recycle instore.

As for the 30% back in rewards, I believe that code is only for online purchases, not instore.

What do you think the chances are that it will work if I buy a $50 ink in-store and use $40 in Rewards to pay for it? I know it doesn’t work for online promotions (e.g. 30% wyb $75 ink) when I pay with combination of Rewards & cc ($150 total: $100 on cc & $50 Rewards) but Rewards are considered a coupon and @597404 used a coupon.

I might as well do it. I’d rather have an ink I can use than spend real money on one I can’t use. It just might need a Chat next month.

make sure it is $50 PRE TAX, I can’t swear that it will work, but it should. Also, check the .com prices of the ink vs store price. often they are cheaper online and they will PM the online price, so you’ll get more bang for your $50 spend. ALSO, MAKE THAT THE ONLY PURCHASE on the order, don’t combine it w/non ink item due to the pro-ration craziness.

    IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR PLUS/PREMIER MEMBERS!!

Happy to report, I bought a $12.49 (pm’ed to website price) cart and recycled 20 at the same time (I had already met the $30 spend in ink for the period) and I earned $80 in ink rewards.

    952619	952619 - BROTHER LC103MS MAGENTA	1	$16.99	$0.00	$16.99	$1.70 (10% ink rewards)

  • 500 Club

@mistercheap why are you saying to make sure its $50 pre-tax?
I’ll be purchasing in NH where there’s no sales tax.
I get “special” online pricing. If I PM to my online price it will be $45.99 and I’d only be paying $5.99 on cc. There’s no minimum spend for the ink, correct?
I don’t need to meet the $30 to recycle minimum since I buy ink almost every month.

I guess in my mind, spending at least $10 oop (non rewards) is a floor. I realize they’ve set no minimum, but guess spending $5oop on ink maybe pushing the envelope, that’s why I used that figure. But it may not matter, do what you think is best for you and hope it all works out.

  • 500 Club

@mistercheap In the past they didn’t require an ink purchase to earn double recycling. They’re trying to increase profits of course by requiring the ink purchase. This time they haven’t set a minimum so I might as well take advantage of it since I may have to call to get credit for using a combination of cc & Rewards anyway.

I won’t be surprised if they set a minimum in the future.

  • 500 Club

Kiosk order has been confirmed by a SD user, as what I expected. That’s what I’m going to do, probably today.

  • 500 Club

It came down to play it safe and pay real money or to use Rewards. I decided to use Rewards and having made that choice figured since I’d end up calling Support anyway I might as well go for it.

I got ink for $39.99 (I forgot to PM to my dot.com special price of $34.99, but that would have meant hunting for even more filler) and a 6 pack of Pellegrino for $6.49. Recycled 20 in the same transaction. Used 2 @ $20 Rewards checks and a $1.50/1 Pellegrino mq. After tax and CRV the total came to about $5 on Chase Ink. My receipt shows the Rewards pro-rated with ~ $35 going towards the ink. So I’ll have spent ~ $5 oop and should get back $80 after a Chat.

I’m going to buy ink for my dad & my brother tomorrow. I’ll PM to my dot.com price on their accounts: $34.99 and get back $40 Rewards. Different store, different state, different cc, no Rewards, no shenanigans 😃

Bought the cheapest $5.99 cartridge I could find through the kiosk and got the $80 reward. I was going to order a >$10 cartridge and use the $5 off $10 coupon, but the coupon didn’t work with it.

  • 500 Club

Double recycle is back next week, if you missed it last week.

  • 500 Club

I can’t believe it. I just checked my Rewards account and it shows the $80 for double recycling done earlier this month. I was sure that I was going to have to contact CS for the Rewards.
    Ink $39.99
    Pellegrino $5.46
    CRV 30¢
    20 ink cartridges
    Total $45.75 - $40 Rewards check
Rewards check pro-rated (including 27¢ towards the CRV) leaving oop of $5.03 for the ink.

The week of 4/11 I bought 2 ink in-store for 40% back in Rewards. I PM’d to my online “business price”. Reg. price $39.99, “business price” $34.99.
Account shows Total Spend $79.98 but pending Rewards $28 which is 40% of $69.98, the PM’d price. I’m surprised that they counted the pre-PM price towards the Total Spend.
