Prices for postcards, international letters and other services will increase as well, effective Aug. 29.

Ugh, but it’s times like these I am glad I have $1,617 in Forever Stamps sitting in my safe deposit box at the bank… They keep on giving me a return on my investment. I bought most of them using Office Depot rewards over the years.
-
Reminder to stock up on stamps before prices increase.
-
I often see stamps for sale online, eBay etc. for better prices than post office. Are they legit?

Not sure, but Costco also sells Forever stamps at a slight discount.
-
@mommyofhandk I have bought forever stamps on eBay for probably the last 3-4 years…never had a problem. But would recommend buying from US only, check seller reviews & ratings, & Iook up the stamps to ensure they match forever series.

I used to buy stamps from US sellers on eBay then I read an article on PhW about what to look for in counterfeits. I looked at the sealed coil I’d bought and couldn’t find something the article said should be there. The coil looked legit but since I couldn’t find the mark I was supposed to find I wondered if they were counterfeit. If I knew someone who bought stamps at OD/OM I’d buy from them but otherwise I’m buying from the P.O.
I have Chase Ink cc which gives 5% back on purchases from office supply stores but Staples doesn’t sell stamps and I don’t have OD/OM within 200 miles.
-
Thanks for the reminder, and also the reminder about using my OD rewards to buy stamps. I’m putting that on my “to do” list.
-
final week coming up before increase.
Remember, you can use Office Depot rewards to get postage stamps in store.

there is no tax on postage stamps, if ebay charges tax, you’re being ripped off by Ebay.

I wonder if the 2017 stamps are fakes. I’ve seen a couple of listings for them. Why would different sellers all be selling 2017 stamps? 🤔

Maybe they are like me. Many years ago I bought tons of stamps with OD rewards and such and put them in my safe deposit box. Maybe they are just getting around to selling their stockpile from years ago. For a lot of my stockpile this is the second or third price increase. The thing I am worried about the most though is the adhesive on the back of the stamps going dry.
-
I’m looking on eBay; some stamps are from China!! Nah, I’ll just go to the post office to get mine.
-
@mrvietnam The ones I’ve bought are generally one sheet of a few different series, maybe two of another. So you may be right about some sellers.
-
@mistercheap Amazon charged the tax

they shouldn’t be. States can not charge sales tax on US postage stamps, obviously you aren’t charged sales tax when you buy stamps at the post office.
-
@mrvietnam Pretty coincidental that everyone is selling 2017. Why not 2018, 2019, 2016? I think the coils of 2017 are counterfeit.

That could quite possibly be true. Not condoning using counterfeits, but genuinely just wondering: When you put postage on a letter does the Post Office have a way to check if your stamp is counterfeit if they even check? With all the millions of pieces of mail they get everyday it hardly seems they have the time to analyze the stamps. All my stamps are genuine as they were all purchased from either Office Depot or Staples over the years and I doubt they sell fakes.

I probably have a couple hundred dollars of stamps in drawers at the Burgerwars estate. I just don’t send out letters much anymore. I’m going to live dangerously and not bother cleaning out the self-service machine in the post office lobby of stamps.
-
On the rare occasion I send parcels using USPS, I pay with Forever stamps, plastering the box with stamps.
I echo what the previous poster said. I am done buying postage. I probably have enough postage to last the rest of my life.
-
@mistercheap Do you have to pay sales tax on a postage stamp?
Yes ,your customer is required to pay sales tax on a retail purchase . Postage stamps are subject to sales tax unless the seller is an authorized vendor of the US Government, such as a PO branch office or a satellite office located in a stationery store, etc.
-
@mrvietnam As I posted above, there are ways to distinguish between real and counterfeit. However the USPS may not be set up to detect them on individual letters because of cost benefit ratio.

Interesting, still a rip off to pay tax on postage stamps, but if the stamps are dirt cheap, guess it’s not the end of the world. At least I don’t get charged tax when I buy them at Office Depot.

FYI, roll of 100 stamps totaled $54.75 shipped (no tax applied) from costco.com as of today.

True. I posted to alert that the price is the same online shipped from Costco as it is in the store. Saves a trip.
