Yes, if your local stores adhere to the one per customer for in-ad coupons then this deal may not be for you. Luckily many of the stores in my area don’t have a problem with it.

Key aspect with this offer is that you can’t cancel within the first 45 days otherwise you won’t get the points. You need to cancel before the free trial ends otherwise you will be automatically billed at the monthly rate. So make sure you set yourself a reminder to cancel on day 46 if you’re not interested in the subscription and just want the points. They are betting on the fact that most people will forget, so don’t be a sucker. These offers come around on a semi frequent basis.

Some of my stores are starting to keep the weekly ad behind the counter and only give it to customers on request. I am sure this is due to high value in-ad coupons and customers hording the ads. I have a coupon friendly cashier at one of the stores that hides the ads. I asked her for one the other day and she gave me 6 and said to let her know if I needed more.

If any of you have a $20 BC and don’t know how to get rid of it or break it down/roll, here is a plan:

What does this do to the length of a prepaid 52 week subscription such as this? What does it get shortened to after the additional $4.49 fees are charged> What a crock. When they say you get 52 weeks for $9.88, do you actually get 52 weeks or is it something else? Or maybe this is what the charges will be AFTER the first 52 weeks if the paper is continued? It would almost have to be that way or else after the first premium issue is published at the end of this month it would in effect wipe out about 6 months of your prepaid Sunday delivery. If anyone who prepaid an annual subscription can chime in I would appreciate it.

I took the plunge with the new rate, so it looks like I will be the guinea pig. I will let you know what happens and if I actually get 52 weeks for the 52 week prepayment, even with the $4.49 premium issue language in the terms and conditions. If they screw me it will be goodbye to the Times forever.

The coupons are unlimited use, so double dipping is not at issue here.

Good news. I called corporate customer service (yes, they are even open on Sundays) and explained what happened and she manually credited me 1,000 fuel points. She did ask for my receipt information but that was no problem as I kept my receipt. I think in future promotions such as this I would be better testing out to see if I get the points on a small dollar amount gift card purchase (say, $25) first before I buy mass quantities. Kind of makes me wonder if Arco gas cards were truly excluded or if it was just some kind of a system error that prevented me from receiving the fuel points. I guess I will never know the answer to that. Did anyone else in So Cal purchase Arco gas cards and if so, did you get your fuel points?

By the way, I see the 4x digital coupons no longer show loaded into my account, so maybe Kroger pulled this deal one day early for unknown reasons.

If you have a competitively priced gas station close by (like Arco is for me), you may want to buy your gift cards at a gas station instead of buying a Visa. A Visa just breaks even for you, but if you have a gas station that is competitively priced then this could turn into a $6 MM for you as gas station cards don’t require activation fees.

WARNING!: I went out to Ralphs and bought $350 of Atco gift cards ($100 worth on one Kroger account and $250 worth on a second Kroger account) and I got back ZERO fuel points even though I had the 4x coupon for gift cards loaded. Evidently not all gift cards count, although no where do they say that or which ones count and which ones don’t. Luckily I will still get 6% off my gas thanks to Am Ex Blue, but no fuel discounts from Kroger.
