@penguin110 Thanks for sharing this. will keep in HD for a few days, then move to DD so everyone can see this as it is important, if not ‘vague’ news.

What troubles me about this is, absolutely NO mention of the ink rewards program (changes, does it continue, etc) especially for those of us who have invested in cartridges and spent $50 on ink in recent months to get the 7 month benefit of recycling total. They’d better not reset the program and penalize people who’ve already bought ink or even worse, D/C it altogether. I never trust announcements that give you no information other than to tell you ‘how great’ a new program will be, but we’ll just ambush you with it on 2/1.

If it’s so great, then tell me what you are planning to do! otherwise it’s not great to be left in suspense.

Thanks, I wasn’t sure where to post it. I will definitely complain if they reduce the recycling benefits. I made my ink/toner purchase a month or so ago and was just charged the fee for my plus account.

  • Hope they don’t get rid of the tech recycling. Easy $5/mo for bringing in broken earbuds.

All I can say is I’m glad I didn’t buy any used cartridges recently.

A relative was told by a Staples cashier that the tech recycling already expired last month. No idea if that’s true or not. I have not recycled this month yet.

  • @c3 I got my $5 on 12/14 for Nov’s tech recycling (broken cable). I recycled another broken earbud the same day for Dec’s.

I got the $5 from Nov as well, but the one recycled this month may be questionable. Nothing to lose for trying, so I’ll do it in any case.

It didn’t expire in November, got my $5 reward the other day. Still advertised on the website, so nothing but false rumor. https://www.staples.com/stores/recycling

    Email this AM:

Thank you for recycling in store. To show our appreciation, you’ll be receiving a recycling reward! It’s on its way, so keep an eye out. Also, remember, you can always access your rewards in the Staples Connect™ app.

Want to earn even more? You’ll continue to get $5 back in rewards every time you recycle or shred at Staples, up to once per calendar month.* So be sure to bring in your old tech, ink and toner cartridges, batteries, writing tools and phone or tablet cases on your next visit.

    See you soon!

  • Staples is excited to announce that their new loyalty program won’t allow us to “game them” with their own Rewards program, lol!
Seriously, glad I didn’t recently buy a big batch of used ink cartridges!
Looks like I’ll be leaving a few months of my paid “Plus” membership on the table here.

The last year or so I’ve found few Staples online deals, and their online “clearance” stuff is often ridiculously expensive.
But their Rewards have come in handy on in-store clearance items, which occasionally include some great deals.
I’m fearful that our local Staples store might go belly up anyway, as I’ve noticed employees often outnumber customers…

They do price match in store and actually have had some decent holiday deals on paper, breakroom, etc. There’s never a reason to overpay with price matching. Plus with the $10 off 30 Q’s that spit out when you recycle tech, the $20 rewards ink check becomes worth $30 and that combined with PM/or sales makes for a great set up. I just hope the ink program remains pretty much the same, on pins and needles waiting for that info.

We have the opposite problem; not enough staff. The main registers are closed. Everything is done at the Copy Center register.

  • Talked to CSR in store, They are being trained on the “new rewards now”. He Indicated you will receive “points” for each $$ spent. No indication as to how they can be used other than they will not need to be used all at one time as the current rewards checks. CSR indicated “recycling” will be part of the new rewards. Good time for a change for me, I may be “blacklisted” I needed to call/Chat to get my Ink rewards issued. Lets just say I was stretching the rules.

  • 500 Club

@597404 Please clarify the “points for each $$ spent”. That seems to be if you buy stuff in the store or online. What about being able to recycle up to 20 cartridges a month for $2 each in store credit “rewards” even if you haven’t bought anything that month and are qualified to do so because of buying ink within the required time slot plus buying the Plus membership?

  • @dionaea I have no further details

  • 500 Club

I know one of the two tech guys at our local Staples. Since he plays Pokemon GO too, high-level and leads our regular weekly Raids, maybe I can persuade him to spill the beans on the new Rewards program.

  • User CalmChannel1150 over at SD posted this:

Some details I read about Staples’ new reward program (1 recycled cartridge = 50 cents)
Earn 1pt on every $1 spent (excluding gift cards, taxes, LQO)

Earn “starting at” 100pt for ink cartridges (still limited per month to something)

Associates actually get earned rewards now at the same rate plus we get 400pts for ink recycling

Points don’t expire as long as you shop at staples within 18 months to stay active

You can earn bonus double points on select categories (tech items, ink and toner, P&M, chairs, etc) and you can pick up to 3 of them

App is going to have other limited time bonus offers that can be activated

Points can be redeemed at register at any whole dollar amount as long as the customer asks. (You have to first enable it on the main screen but go to the add tenders screen to see the available amount and add it)

Points are refunded when returning an item paid partially or in full with points

Points are worth a half penny each so 200pts = $1

  • My ink spend runs out on 1/11/24. I was thinking about buying more this week for the 50% rewards but now will hold off. I’ll do one more recycling. Fifty cents a cartridge is not worth the trip. I’ll save them for Office Depot for now. I’m pretty sure they will follow suit quickly on lowering the amount for the cartridges.

    Thanks for sharing.

I’m vested into the ink program until March. Now, I’m not going to be happy if they ‘cheat’ me those last 2 months devaluing ink recycles to 50.c each vs $2. ($5 vs $20) and I will bitch saying the 6 months should be under the old program because that’s how it was advertised when I made the ink purchase in Sept. But I’m sure their fine print says they can changes these programs anytime they like…so, who knows.

But have faint hope with this ‘starts at 100points per cart’, not sure what kickers will be required to earn 400 pts per cart (current level $2). But even if they say we can now recycle 20 or 30 vs the current 10, still not worth it because it’s about 30-40c ea to get empties on Ebay, so to earn 50c on cart you paid .35 for is no great shakes. Perhaps the 100 points will be for having to buy NO ink and you’ll get 400 for buying $50 in ink every six months. one can hope! or get a P/T job at staples to earn 400.

I just bought 300 carts (was pretty much out) so even if I just do OD at 20 month (mine and family members account) I’ll use 240 in 2024.

@briarycliffs you’re in a no risk situation. You can recycle by 1/11 for January. Then on 2/1 you’ll know the details, if by some chance you’ll earn 400 points for buying $50 in ink (can’t imagine getting 50c ea x 10 on $50 in ink), you can buy in Feb/earn for Feb and not miss any month. You timed it well sir.

I’m in the same spot, ink spend runs out 1/7. I sure hope they extend the value or limit of what paid members can recycle since I bought the Plus membership just to recycle 20 carts/month. OD by me closed a couple years ago, so ink recycling was still a value for me through Staples, guess this could be the end of the run.

  • So it’s almost the end of the month and just found out about the chances. Was about to restart my ink recycling away after a hiatus and glad I didn’t go buy ink…

No official notifications and the web site doesn’t have details. I guess ink devalues to 50c but are they increasing the limit?

  • @rsuaver If 50 cents in rewards for ink & toner and with their highly overinflated prices, I might just be done with Staples.

Thanks again for being a loyal Staples Rewards® member.

  • Just recycled in-store. Manager said it’s changing over Feb 7 and an app will be required and it’s changing to points. So if you have any carts left get them in now.

  • 500 Club

I have enough to turn in on Saturday. Glad I bought my new laptop last month and had Rewards to help with the cost. I’ve had the app on my smartphone for over a year. I hate that more and more stores are blowing off anyone who doesn’t have or doesn’t use a smartphone. Our OfficeMax/OfficeDepot closed at the beginning of October, so Staples is the only office supply/computer/etc. physical store here. And I learned last week that this is the final week for their only certified tech repair person.

Again, changing to ‘points’ isn’t necessarily a negative if the payouts stay the same for ink recycling with ink purchases as they are now. We just don’t know. But I agree, I’ll play it safe and recycle before 2/7 so I’m not screwed if the program is not as good.

  • Does it say anything about tech recycling ($5/mo) changing? Or just cartridges?

  • Global Moderator

I was at Staples yesterday recycling 10 ink carts. I asked the manager about the new rewards program. He said it will be app-based and the new app will come out on 2/7/24. He said you will earn points and that recycling will pay 400 points a cartridge which is equivalent to the same $2 they pay now. He said the good thing is you will get your points ($) only 5 days later rather than having to wait until the next month as it is now.

  • 500 Club

@dionaea today I was told that App won’t be mandatory. Can still use website. But they also told me that the minimum $50/6 mos. to recycle went away, that there’s no longer a required spend. I don’t trust that this store’s staff.

I use smartphones that do not have phone service. I use the store’s WiFi for things requiring an app.

It appears that the amount you receive for recycling ranges from 100-400 points. I presume the # of empties also varies. Is the range 10-40/month?

  • @my4mainecoons I have Staples Plus. Getting 400 points per cartridge and can recycle 20 max. How’d you get 30?

I made a new account and it gets 100 points per cartridge and 10 a month.

It also seems like they got rid of the ink purchase requirement?

  • The conversation to the new rewards was a total disaster for me. My staples.com userid was not my email address and I could not enroll in the new program. I kept getting an error when trying to sign up. I was on chat for over an hour trying to fix. They changed my userid to my email address and then I could enroll. But now all my purchase history is GONE and I can only recycle 10 cartridges a month. I was premier and could recycle 20 before. I have to start all over again.

Same here. My userid was not my e-mail address and I am having trouble converting over. So far, at least for me, these Easy Rewards or anything but easy.

Does ink recycling require an ink purchase every 6 months like it did before?

  • @mrvietnam I have a bad news , I was a plus member & used to recycle 20 inks a month for $40.00 rewards , now limited to 10 inks a month at 100 points each , 1000 points are worth $5.00 !!! Not worth it

  • 500 Club

@mrvietnam IDK for sure but as mentioned above the store told me that there’s no longer a minimum purchase requirement. My brother read the same thing on another site.

Tech is 1000 points for one item.

Since I recycled 20 on 2/3 I want to know if I can recycle another 10 this month and if I will receive 400 points for the ones recycled on 2/3.

  • @mrvietnam I wonder what they use to determine the points you earn per cartridge? I was a primer member with over $3,000 in spending in the past year. Now I only get 100 points per cartridge and a limit of 10.

  • @metschke That is same info I got so far , they making a big mistake chasing loyal customers out

Figure out how much time is left on your Plus membership and argue for a partial refund of the membership fee or to have your points per ink cart increased.

@madman555 I don’t know their algorithm but I’ve had Premier every year since 2001 except in 2023 when they gave me Elite for a year as an apology for making a mistake on my account.

ETA: Length of membership must be a factor. I just checked my Dad’s account. I’ve just been recycling tech on it since that program started and he got 400 points on 15 carts/month.
