Staples - New Offer STARTS AGAIN 12/1 Recycle 10 ink carts at store get $25 in rewards make sure offer is activated

also discussion about this in the master staples thread.

Thanks. Credit to Maine for first listing the deal in the Staples.com Online Savings Code thread, but also thanks MC for making it a separate thread to highlight the deal for wider viewership.

@mistercheap Ok, so I haven’t done my monthly recycle for September of 20 ink cartridges yet, getting the normal $40 ($2 per) in Easy Rewards.
So can I go ahead and do that first, then come back with an additional 10 cartridges a day or two after, and get the extra $25 in Easy Rewards?
Also planning to recycle technology (old cable) for another few $ as well this month…
-
Recycled 10x2 empty cartridges yesterday.
Now I’m tapped out.
Where can I buy more for $.50 ea?
-
@ukedog Here’s how I do it in separate back to back transactions. 1) Recycle tech. 2) Recycle 10@500 points. 3) Recycle regular monthly @400 last because its >10.
You could probably do 20 then 10 but then it will probably apply 10@500 and 10@400 (presuming that’s what you’re getting for the 20 monthly).

I turned in 30 cartridges and technology in one transaction and got points for everything. My regular 20 cartridges, the 10 bonus for $25.00 and the technology.

Actually, I bought carts last Black Friday time, 300 for $60 right before the Staples changes. Recycle 20 a month at OD on 2 accounts. Haven’t recycled at Staples since Feb until Aug and now Sept and hopefully Oct. Gives me a nice boost in my rewards balance going into the holidays. Not to mention, each $20 in rewards is worth $30 in value w the $10/30 Q, so its a nice deal.
-
@mistercheap
Do you think the $25 will work in September and October? I also recycled the first time in a while last week and got the $25. I’m wondering if I can do it again before the coupon expires on the 5th or if it’s a one time use thing.

Someone will have to be the guinea pig on Oct 1 and let us all know. Worst that happens is, you only get 50c each for the carts up to your stated max in your rewards panel.
-
Any one try this yet? Just have to recycle 1.
-
@my4mainecoons I just recycled 20 cartridges (my limit) and was credited with 20 cartridges @ 400 points instead of 10@400 and 10 @500. So, I think that if you used the coupon during Sept, it won’t work now.

I was just coming to post that people on SD have said the same. no go if you recycled on the promo in Sept.

The new cartridge recycling offer ends 11:2.
I will recycle my 10 cartridges and alkaline battery today to make my free $27.50
-
I just got back from recycling 10 cartridges and one alkaline battery on separate transactions. On my first transaction of 10 cartridges I didn’t get any coupons back, but on my second transaction of a single alkaline battery I got two $10 off $30 purchase coupons. One of the coupons says it expires tomorrow and the other coupon says it /31/24.
I was just wondering do these coupons that print out on recycling transactions if II use them on other accounts or does it have to be used on the account that it came from?
-
@mrvietnam they only print on tech recycling transactions, not on ink recycling and only 1 a month. You can use them on any account.
Regardless of the date printed they really expire 12-31-24.
I get e-receipts. Since there’s no bar code on the $10/$30 the cashier has to key in the 16 digits. I suggest that I read the number to them. It’s easier for them and they don’t see the expiration date.

good on any account, not tied to your rewards info.

I just did the same thing. I have 2 accounts, one is plus and one is regular.
On the plus account, i recycled 10 inks and just my receipt printed out.
On my regular account, I recycled 10 inks and a phone charger. a 10/30 printed out.
I then used the 10/30 coupon with the points I had on my plus account to make a purchase, no problems.
-
On a related note, I am down to only one month left iof empties. If anyone knows of any good deals on eBay for bulk empty cartridges, please share.
-
I recycled 40 ink carts & a tech item in a single transaction and received the correct number of points. I know that it was previously reported that the ink cart counting as tech glitch had been fixed. This was my first time having a cashier entered 40 as my number of ink carts.
I received 30@400 + 10@500 + 1@500 = 17,500.

Looks like the updated coupon was automatically activated. Since I recycled my limit of 20 cartridges last week, I should be able to bring in 10 more this week.

I ordered this on eBay just now:
Mix lot of 450 Virgin & Non Virgin Empty Ink Cartridges for Staples Rewards
$97.95
It comes with free shipping in 2-4 days and free returns.
Seller: planetgreenelectronics
99.2% (93.3K)What made this a must buy for me is when I was going through the checkout process I noticed they offered me a $25 off $50+ coupon (YMMV) and I clicked on it and it saved me $25. So after the $25 coupon and the 3% I am getting back from Am Ex Everyday Blue card, I paid $79.55, or 17.7 cents a cartridge. IMHO that is a very good price nowadays for empties. Since I recycle 30 cartridges a month, these 450 carts will last me for 15 months, or through January 2026.
-
@mrvietnam Who offered the coupon, the seller or eBay?
Last month they offered them for $87 to someone probably because he was a new customer.
I didn’t get an offer because I’ve bought from them in the past.

I didn’t get an offer because I’ve bought from them in the past.I’m not sure who the offer was from but when I went through the checkout process, there was a banner at the top that offered me $25 off of $50 or more purchase. Not sure if that was from the seller or from eBay… I rarely use eBay these days for the past several years. The only thing I bought on eBay is once a year I bought a box of cartridges, but that’s about it… whoever the offer was from when I saw that big savings, I jumped on it immediately.

I am very impressed with planetgreenelectronics. I bought a lot of 450 cartridges, but I divided them all into bags of 10 and counted them and they mailed me a whopping 628 (for the price of 450). I also got 36 cents back from TCB, so I only paid $79.19 for 628 empties, which comes to only 12.6 cents each. That is pre-pandemic pricing. Now I won’t be in the market to buy cartridges again until around October 2026. Wahoo!

Does the amount you tedeem Staples reward points lower your tax liability on your purchase? Maybe it depends on what state you are in. I will test it out today. I am planning to buy 2 12 ct boxes of Sharpie gel pens pricematched to Amazon and use a $10 off $30 coupon, bringing down the price to just 79 cents a pen or less if there is no tax levied.

Wow. Good thing I was able to catch it before all my rewards were stolen. I just got an email from Staples saying that I just changed my username, but I never did change my username. I called Staples and they said that somebody had hijacked my Rewards account and changed all the information the phone number the address the email the whole thing, so she’s gonna allow me to use a different email and a different phone number and make a new Rewards account and then they’ll transfer the balance from my old account to my new account

possibly from an online data breach? wonder if that’s how they got your information. if you use that email/PW combo at any other sites Mr. V, you might want to change your PW at all other online sites.

Actually I found out the bad guy actually was able to drain all my points. I live in California. The points were redeemed in a store on the other side of the country. It’s been nearly 2 1/2 weeks now and Staples still hasn’t returned my points, but they are going to. I just called a couple days ago and they said they’re trying to do due diligence on their part because there’s an uptick on people stealing each other‘s points so they’re going to implement some system to make sure that it’s just the customers who own the points who redeem the points. I wouldn’t be surprised if they start including a password along with your phone number or something similar. They said they’re gonna try to roll it out next week sometime.
What was funny, is I actually called Staples in time to do some thing about it before the points were used. The representative told me she had frozen my account so nobody would be able to use it and the points were still there at the time, but just a couple hours later they were redeemed so it seems Staples, isn’t that good. She said when I called in that she had even changed the phone number on the account to some random number, so it’s unclear how the bad guy was actually able to use the points. Maybe sometimes the bad guys call in to Customer Service and since they have all the details, they impersonate the customer and do things to the account. That’s why most banks and credit card companies have voice recognition when you call and have very strict security measures but retail stores don’t go to that extent.
By the way, MC, I just did change my password on PW and lately I’ve been going around site to site giving each account a unique password. It makes my job a little bit harder cause I have to remember all those passwords but it’ll be really tight security now on my accounts… no doubt the information was stolen from the dark web from some data breach in the past. There are so many data breaches lately that it’s hard to keep up with them. About the only preventative measure we have is to change the password regularly and don’t use the single password over several accounts. Years ago when the data breaches were becoming very common, I locked my credit reports so I don’t have to worry about that aspect of it

I don’t want to give out the state in case he monitors this board. Just curious though, when did your points get stolen and how long did it take them to refund your points back to you? From what the operations person told me at Staples is this points theft has been happening a lot lately so they’re trying to put a solution in place so once they replace points that they don’t get stolen again and again. I don’t blame them. I think a PIN number in addition to just a phone number would solve the issue. I think Staples also needs to implement two factor authorization when somebody tries to login online. We’ll see in the coming days what Staples plans too.
-
Another thing that I noticed is when you redeem rewards points at Staples, you can only redeem them for a specific whole dollar amount it’s not like Rite Aid where if the cost is $14.49 you can redeem them for $14.49 in points and at Rite Aid they allow you to use your rewards points to pay for tax which they don’t at Staples either. Even at Staples competitor, Office Depot, they allow you to redeem your rewards money for dollars and cents, but not Staples. Just some observations that I’ve noticed.
-
@mrvietnam As many prices end $xx.99, hunt for a cheap filler to get over the next dollar point to maximize point use and minimize tax.

You should not be remembering your passwords. Either set up password manager in chrome, which will help you generate and store the passwords, or use something like keepass and put the password file on some cloud storage and sync with your phone.

In my state, rewards come off as coupons which lower the sales tax as well. If I use a $10/30 and $20 in rewards on a $32.10 order INC tax. I pay 30c oop at the end. Tax is wiped out except for 1-2c.

Same here in California, as long as they are store coupons. My point was that if you bought something for say $14.49 you could only use $14 in Staples rewards points on the order.
I just have an account for my wife and myself, but I could see how this new policy change would really screw up people that had multiple accounts they were managing under fictitious names.

What policy change? Using whole dollar increments began with the new program in Feb. How does it screw people up? Regardless of number of accounts you pay by the whole dollar.
