Popular Direct up to 2.26%
Not excited about this bank. There’s a $25 fee if you close the account within 180 days of opening the account, and they won’t guarantee the rate for any amount of time. You could earn the rate for a couple of months, then they drop it to 0.25%, and you’re stuck because you didn’t earn enough to cover the $25 early termination fee.
-Z
So? Just drop your balance to $0.01.
You actually have to drop it to $500 in order to avoid a fee, HOWEVER, Popular has been consistently raising their rates to be at or near the top of all banks during this calendar year so unlikely that they’ll drop their rates…
Damn! Must have missed that. I dropped it to 1 cent at the beginning of the month after going to another bank.
Well at least it’s just going to cost you $4. You can throw $500 in there for next month so you don’t have to pay again. 2.26% is still a good rate.

So you get your balance back LESS the $25 termination fee and the $0.01 you leave in the account. Not a good deal when you lose part of your principal. Breakeven is at three months by my reckoning. For example, put $5K in at 2.65%, so you would earn (rounded, and without compounding), $11.04 per month. To equal the $25 termination fee, you would have to stay in at least three months and hope that they don’t drop the rate during those three months. If they guaranteed the rate for three months, I would be OK with taking a chance and putting my money there.
Yes, they have been raising their rate, but no guarantee that they will continue.

I was getting nearly $300 a month interest before transferring to a higher interest bank.

So is this the same account? I have 1 cent in it after transferring the money to higher rate accounts. If I put $25K+ back in will I get 2.30% or do I have to ask them or do I have to open a new account?

Yes, that is true…because i have it too and nothing changed for those who already have it but apparently they are not offering for new accounts at this point…Maybe they are getting another new product ready for release…LOL Or (as the sometimes do) not offer anything new for a while…Probably when they have gotten sufficient funds for the moment…
-
Awesome! Just got the account a few days ago. Assume this move will allow them to keep that rate longer than if they got flooded with more depositors.

https://investor.vanguard.com/mutual-funds/profile/overview/vmmxxIs it FDIC insured?
-
@jtownsucks46
No…but it’s covered by Vanguard’s SIPC (brokerage insurance)…also it is a Money Market Fund so share price is always a stable $1 a share (no fluctuation)…So not only do you have the SIPC coverage but let’s face it, what are the odds of Vanguard going under? (lol)…
-
Only Vanguard Brokerage, has SIPC coverage: “Securities in your brokerage account are held in custody by Vanguard Brokerage Services, a division of Vanguard Marketing Corporation. Vanguard Marketing Corporation is a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC), which protects securities customers of its members up to $500,000 (including $250,000 for claims for cash). Explanatory brochure available upon request or at sipc.org.” The available MM fund in that is their Federal MM which has a slightly lower interest rate, but earnings from it are not subject to state tax.
Also, SIPC does not protect against the decline in value of your securities.
-
@frugalpete
That is true…But again, a Money Market Fund at a brokerage is $1 a share…no deviation…so share price does not fluctuate…
-
@craig10x
Big news during the financial crisis whan a MM fund went under $1/share. The fed government imposed more stringent rules after that, but its may still be possible, although very unlikely.
-
@frugalpete
Very true…that was a rarity (that fund that went under $1 a share) and keep in mind…this is VANGUARD we are talking about here…they wouldn’t let it happen…it would destroy their reputation (same applies to the other majors like Fidelity TD Ameritrade Schwab TRowePrice etc…
