SYWR Points Back with Purchase Offers Thread

Here is a kmart.com offer valid through this Saturday, 10/6/18:
Points paid in three $25 installments: 24 hours after transaction, 10/30/18, and 12/2/18

Get $75 CASHBACK in points when you spend $75+ at Kmart.com. See details. Members get $75 CASHBACK in points total in 3 installments when you spend $75 or more on qualifying purchase at Kmart.com. Points issued in 3 equal installments of $25 each are only valid for 30 days of issuance. First installment of points credited to account 24 hours after transaction and valid for 30 days. Second installment of points credited to account on 10/30/18 and valid for 30 days.Third installment of points credited to account on 12/2/18 and valid for 30 days. Offer Valid 9/29/18 through 10/6/18.

Normally I would jump on an offer like this, but these point offers are getting more and more risky, especially when they pay in installments, given the dire financial situation of the company. I would be extremely careful about doing these type of offers and if you are sitting on a lot of points I would spend them. With that said I am hoping though they can at least last through the holiday season. Perhaps Sears can find some lenders and stay in business. They have proved us wrong about bankruptcy time and time again.

Thanks Sportsfan! This is my kind of offer–points post immediately and are good for 30 days.

SEARS: $60 back on $60 and $75 back on $75 in Home. 3 installments. First posts 24 hrs after purchase and the next ones on the 20th of the month. Since offer goes until 10/20 one could purchase on 10/19 and have 2 sets of points posting on the 20th, the first & 2nd installments.

In theory one could do both offers on Oct. 19 and on Oct. 20 have $20, $20, $25, $25.

    Sorry about that. Sears.

  • If you 'd rather earn some points in store, my local Sears had signs up for “Spend $40, get back $40 in points in Apparel. Points valid for 30 days after issuance. First $20 in points issued immediately after transaction, subsequent payment of $20 in points issued on the 20th of the month starting 11/20.” Looks like you have to make your purchase by 10/20. This offer excludes Land’s End.

There is $60 back on $60 for Sears home and $75 back on $75 for Sears home appliances, lawn & garden, and sporting goods (I think these are even 3 separate deals, so in theory you could do all of them once each). Are these the deals you are referring to, or is there another $75 back on $75 for Sears home?

Kmart has $75 back on $75 sitewide as well on a similar timeline as those Sears deals (3rd installment for the Kmart deal comes on 12/23 instead of 12/20). By the way, the 2nd installment doesn’t post on 10/20; it posts on 11/20 for all of these deals.

  • 500 Club

@lo For the $75 back, I found it while looking at microwaves so I guess it must be the same as the one you quoted: home appliances, lawn & garden, sporting goods. I think there’s also $75/$75 on tools still.

Yes, you’re correct. The point overlapping will occur on Nov. 20 not Oct. 20. If you purchase on Oct. 19 or 20 the first set of points will post 24 hrs later and be valid for 30 days. The 2nd set of points will post on Nov. 20.

I think the current deals are:
    $15/$15 clothing & accessories (more wallets…) online
    $40/$40 clothing & accessories B&M
    $60/$60 Home online
$75/$75 Home appliances, lawn & garden, sporting goods online
    $75/$75 Tools online

Do them all and use the points on 42 pc socket set for $77 gc. Utility knife or penlight for remaining points. Net ~ $60 over 3 mo. for a lot of stuff…

  • 500 Club

bummed. After @lo pointed out the $75/$75 was good for lawn & garden I tried to order the Gorilla Heavy Duty Garden Cart. Can’t find anywhere within 500 miles that has it in stock and its not available for shipping. 🙁

  • @my4mainecoons Tools are $50 back on $100 this week, same in-store. There are probably other department deals in store too, though I didn’t have time to wander into every department to check yet this week.

As I mentioned, I am pretty sure those 3 $75 back on $75 deals are all separate deals too. There is also $60 back on $60 for shoes. Not to mention $30 back on $30 for Marketplace jewelry and $40 back on $40 for the Bestselling Marketplace vendor.

So just off the top of my head, that’s at least $545 worth of “free” stuff you can get this week between Sears, Kmart, and Marketplace. One would never get done shopping (and using up all the points) if maxing out every deal this week.

Sad thing for me personally is that I’m in need of some toy and electronics items. 😛 I did buy my toys via the Kmart deal, but my electronics item fell off the site while I was waiting for a “free” deal on it. 😞

  • If you’re planning to buy a snowblower to get the $75/$75 deal, Sears has another offer going. If 3" of snow falls in Central Park, NY on Nov 11, you get 100% back in points on your snowblower. Snow amount has to be verified by the National Weather Service. The 100% back deal ends on Nov 3. I wonder if it will stack with the $75/$75 deal?
It’s snow lie, Sears offering 100% back on snowblowers, if…(https://www.sears.com/content/shc/sears/en_us/localads.html/#/) See the Central Park Challenge ad.

  • @sportsfan64 “It’s snow lie”, LOL–nice!.. Just when I thought Sears’ self-liquidation promos can’t get any squirrelier, they come up with something like this!

  • @ukedog Remember this? 😃 https://phatwalletforums.com/topic/7406/sears-beat-the-heat-promotion-bookie-bet-on-free-room-a-c-or-freezer-over-199-depending-on-july-4-temperature-at-reagan-dc-airport

Can you use Kmart merchandise return cards to buy third party gift cards? I have a $30 merchandise return card I would like to liquidate. I guess no harm in trying.

What is the consensus out there, when Sears files, SYW points will most likely become worthless, right? I bet there is a disclaimer in the terms of the SYW program that it can be discontinued at any time for any reason and the points have no monetary value.

Good thing I didn’t do the $300 in points with a $300 spend automotive deal they recently had or any of the recent 100% back installment deals (which were many). I was tempted, but wisely didn’t pill the trigger. Maybe I will spend some of my points down by getting an oil change.

@mrvietnam merchandise return cards are same as gc AFAIK. I’ve bought a lot of gc at KM using gc but not recently. I added gc in with a purchase just so it wasn’t so obvious. I used to get Staples gc there but since Staples has dried up Amazon and gas gc might be your best bet. Have not tried buying eg prepaid Visa cards at Sears or KM.

  • 500 Club

    @mrvietnam get a $5 item and $25 gc

  • Global Moderator

@mrvietnam Depends what type of bankruptcy they file for. Chapter 7, 9 or 11. Some are more severe than others.

As we saw with Toys R Us, gift cards remained valid for some time. Hard to say on the points. They may give you a window to spend them or lose them, for those with pending points spread over 3-12 months, if you’re lucky they’ll award them all and tell you to spend them in 30 days or lose them. They may not want further litigation, especially where already awarded points are concerned.

Time will tell, but I certainly wouldn’t be putting forth ANY oop right now to get points related deals. Not to mention, during bankruptcy sales, they typically jack up prices, then start off taking 20% off then increase it as time goes on. sort of a racket.

Success! I was able to buy a $25 Amazon gift card paying with a Kmart merchandise return card. Highly recommend anyone holding on to Sears gift or merchandise return cards to convert them over to third party gift cards as soon as possible.

I am waiting for my car’s oil change to be done and I will pay $25 in points to pay. That will bring me down to only $57,75 in points and I have $5.69 left on my return card.

Not sure if it is true or not, but the guy who helped me at the auto center said that if Sears survives bankruptcy that all the auto centers will be sold and owned by another company.

I highly doubt anyone filing lawsuits over revoked points would have a leg to stand on. When you signed up for SYW part of the terms said that the program can end at anytime for any reason and that points have no monetary value. The best advice I could give anybody is what I’n doing, spending points down and liquidating gift cards as soon as possible. You knew when Sears started giving points in installments that was the beginning of the end.

Depends Mr. V, a case could be made that Sears misled people and purposely offered these points knowing full well they’d never payout on them. Lawyers take cases left and right where this sort of thing goes. Let’s face it, we’d seen unprecedented points offers since June on appliances, tires, etc. $500 back on appliances? likely an effort to raise cash in a shell game of sorts.

  • Global Moderator

    @mistercheap

True, MC. Good point. Never thought of it that way. Would probably go forward as a class action, so you probably eouldn’t Get much back.

With Sears soon closing and Rite Aid +UPs with great deals and no limits long gone and Staples rebates gone ,not sure where the deals to be had will be at going forward.

  • 500 Club

I heard more than a year ago that the Auto Centers would be owned by another company. They’re already sort of on their own.

I’m going in the opposite direction right now. I have no points and about $500 in gc. I’m going to use gc for the points back offers to get as much stuff as I can before stock gets too low. Get the points, turn them back into gc and keep spending down the gc that way until I run out of gc or they close the stores. Sears is filing but no word on KM right?

  • Global Moderator

    @my4mainecoons

Sears and Kmart are the same company now, right? I think if one files for bankruptcy, they both will be in bankruptcy.

Maine, that’s a pretty risky strategy as the SYW program could end soon after they file bankruptcy. From what I read on the news bankruptcy could happen as soon as this week.

  • 500 Club

@mrvietnam Sure its risky but its all play money isn’t it? I didn’t spend anything to earn the gc. Its been a great ride and I’m really sad its ending. My upright freezer, refrigertor, dishwasher and microwave were all paid for with SYWR points. But more than that, I remember Sears Wish Book when I was a kid. It was part of Christmas to go through the catalog picking out things we wanted-- which of course we never got, lol.

Sears Hometown Stores are independent franchises and gc can be used there.

  • It just dawned on me. Why would Eddie Lampert & ESL Investments go so “all-in” on all things Sears, and property?

    Simple.

After Bankruptcy and Liquidation hit, he and his Private Equity company can gobble up all the remaining assets, and Sears 2.0 will be re-created. His company will get additonal income stream generated from royalties from using the Sears brand by independently owned Sears Hometown Stores. Craftsman products have already been selling at other stores, and that’s a continued income flow for Eddie/ESL. Same with if Sears decides to fully let go of the Kenmore brand to Eddie & Co. Some of Sears stores that ESL/Eddie gobbled up that can’t find tenants will be re-born into Sears 2.0 stores. The wild card is the Sears Auto Centers. Will they be sold to Amazon for tire installation, or will Sears/ESL/Eddie hold onto the assets?

The gas may be almost out on Sears as we currently know it, but it’s brand and its Stores aren’t fully dead. (But Sears Gift Cards and SYWR Points are a completely different matter.)

  • Users are reporting that Sears and Kmart pulled all remaining third party gift cards from store floors.

Delivery trucks also halted according to anonymous posts on the layoff: https://www.thelayoff.com/sears-holdings

  • The blood is in the water and the sharks are coming.

@ctujackbauer I was in the store trying to buy 3rd party gc when it died. While I was at the register someone pulled the remaining cards from the sales floor.

So now that I’ll be spending my gc on merchandise I figure I have nothing to lose by doing the promotions. I bought a microwave for $120. Receipt shows I’ll be getting back $25 x 3. Since nothing’s official yet I should get the first $25 tomorrow. So $95 for the microwave if the next 2 $25’s don’t post. I’m ok with that. I paid $130 in points for current microwave.

You actually dodged a bullet by not being able to buy a third party gc. Some types of gift cards were “bought” but not activated and able to be redeemed. Apparently Sears didn’t pay their processor.

Don’t buy a mattress either! Buy something you can walk out of the store with.

@ctujackbauer I bought and paid for the gc but Sales Associate noticed that they weren’t activated so he refunded the order. Tried again with different denomination card. Same thing. Tried a 3rd time with a different card. By this time I guessed something had happened and bought the microwave instead.

First $25 back for the microwave has posted.

Luckily I bought my $25 Amazon gift card two days ago and immediately loaded it into my Amazon account. It had the $25 loaded as promised.

The rumors out there is that Sears will file for bankruptcy by Monday. That is the day they owe a massive debt payment, but do not have enough to pay it.

I only have $1.35 left in SYW points and no gift cards/return cards, so I am in a good position. Hope you guys use your points and gift cards before it is too late.

    @mrvietnam Vegas baby, Vegas 😏

Just placed an online order for $75 in Home, used $10/$40 coupon and paid the $65 w/gc.
Hoping they have items in warehouse.
Should have the first $20 of $60 back tomorrow so will have “spent” $45 for 4 items. I get $15 ea. on the bay so basically cashing out. If I get the next 2 $20 installments, even better.

I tried buying $75 worth of Sporting Goods in store last night. Didn’t work-- receipt didn’t show that I’d be getting the points back. We tried different items, still no luck. Works online so I guess I’ll order online for instore pick up.

Probably better stock in warehouses than stores. Keep in mind, once they go into ‘liquidation’ mode all sales and promos will end. it will be a straight % off some high inflated price most likely. SO SPEND THE POINTS while you can spend points and get some decent prices on the merchandise too.

  • 500 Club

@mistercheap My $65 Home order has shipped. 🙂 I’m buying stuff that will still be good price if I only receive the first installment back. I’m trying to get as close to $100 in SYWR pts as I can today so pts will be available tomorrow.
Then I’ll convert the points back to gc ($99.99 socket set on sale for $29.99, pay full price get $77 gc).
GC -> SYWR pts -> GC with net result of having a bunch of points pending for Nov & Dec and spending down my GC for better value than just paying for stuff outright.

I looked at Dewalt driver drill but the $99 one isn’t included in the Tools promo, only the $179 one’s included.

  • Global Moderator

    @my4mainecoons

the gift cards will be safer than the points, they should be good even during any kind of liquidation as we saw with Toys R Us. can’t say the same for points.

  • 500 Club

@mistercheap That was my thought. I didn’t have any points until I started this buying spree. I’m earning today to spend tomorrow. The hard part is finding stuff that’s still a “deal” if I only get back the first installment.

  • Global Moderator

But I do feel bad for the many, many people who will lose jobs over this. Including all the shop your way customer service people, most whom I found helpful.

Sears filing for Bankruptcy is a big deal, an American institution that was once King of the Retail/Catalog empire. End of an era for sure.

  • 500 Club

@mistercheap I’ve been a “regular” at my Sears store for years. Can’t say enough good things about the sales staff. They know their products whether it be appliances, furniture or tools. Most of them are older-- no offense to teenagers but they’re not high school kids.

Last night Brian (mattresses) worked with me trying to get 3rd party gc transaction to work. Only after we gave up did I learn that he should have gone home 20 min earlier. We didn’t talk specifics about what’s happening but I could tell he was upset.

Bob (70 yr old) in major appliances is amazing. Really knows all the major appliances. 4 years ago Sears had “buy $25 gc earn $5 gc” promos for Fathers Day, Mothers Day, etc. Bob would “run” my 10 back to back transactions. (Major appliances can be pretty slow sometimes.) Buy $25 gc, earn $5 gc. Buy another $25 gc, pay for it with first gc, earn another $5 gc. We’d do it until I’d earned $50 in bonus gc. That’s when we learned that one’s SYWR acct will get frozen at 9 transactions… because LP was concerned about employee theft. Last night Bob rang up my Sporting Goods purchase (9 items) then when I didn’t get the points back, voided it and helped with two other transaction combinations until we gave up. Its not much but he did get commission on my microwave purchase.

Stuart (part time evenings in tools) is a letter carrier during the day. He used to be self employed but got to a point where he needed to be saving for retirement. So he took job with the USPS during the day and Sears at night.

Ena works for US Customs & Immigration during the day, at Sears 3 nights/wk. She just got a promotion at Customs so she was thinking of leaving Sears. She’s been there more than 10 yrs.

  • @mistercheap Yeah, me too on the employees thing. They’ve been super helpful to me, especially in the Sears store online pickup department. Thanks largely to the SYWR points stuff, Sears and Kmart have provided me great deals on tools, household items, and even clothes/shoes over the last few years. I’m always baffled with gripes on SYWR.

Well I’m down to around $2 in SYWR points now, with some UPS shipping notices from Kmart orders just arriving…

Sears, closing in on bankruptcy, nears deal for financing to stay alive until Christmas
Sears is planning to file for bankruptcy as soon as this weekend.
It is nearing a deal with lenders that could keep the retailer open through Christmas, so Sears could look for a buyer.
As part of the deal, Sears will shutter some of its stores immediately.

@mrvietnam No offense but we know they’re filing this weekend. Big payment due on Monday and they don’t have the money. The questions are: Chap. 7 vs. Chap 11, what happens to points owed and gc. Right now its all speculation.

Actually the point of my post is that they are nearing a deal that will allow them to stay open through Christmas, so they can try to find a buyer while in bankruptcy. If that happens though, it’s anyone’s guess if the SYW program would still operate and if gift cards would be honored. The article says if they do stay open they would immediately shut 150 of their stores. I found the article a good read. It is very recently published just hours ago.
